Many industries could be either. If you are promoting vice it is haram. Working at the casino, probably a safe bet it's haram. Drug dealer? Pretty clear on that one. Most industries have been built off of loans which involve interest. If you do not want to work for a company that has used interest to grow, that's going to be a different story than you do not want to sell alcohol. At what point do you say "this is to close to the point of haram"? Selling alcohol at the corner? I know Muslims that do that and say "but I don't sell to Muslims." Okay... seems a cop out answer and a bit of rationalizing, but who am I to say. Most major companies have either taken or given interest based loans to grow. If you don't want to work for a company doing that, you're going to have to do so in a country where Islamic appropriate loans are the norm, not the unique product offered by Islamic credit unions and whatnot, because that's not a thing at J. P. Morgan or Citibank.
