What's wrong with showing hair? and women who wears hijab, are you really happy wearing it and how does it makes you feel wearing it in summer when it's too hot!

It’s not about the hair it’s about everything except face and hands and it says directly in the Quran to protect her and let her be known as a Muslim. It’s in the section that tells me FIRST to lower their gaze and women as well to lower their gaze. It has to do with the aggression of the male lust and protection from harassment. Islam teaches that women have stronger sex drives but aren’t aggressive so therefore mens dress isn’t required but they still should cover everything like you see in Pakistani and Arab mens clothing. There’s four categories, required, strongly advised, disliked, and haram or prohibited. Full dress is require of women and strongly advised of men. It has positive effects on men and women. For one women don’t feel extreme pressure to have a sexy body and over obsess over their looks. And it keeps lust in the wrong context to the minimum. Islam is very pro sex and it’s a charity and good deed to satisfy your spouse, but a huge sin outside of marriage. Also marriage is easy to get into and out of in Islam hence it’s not as big of a deal as in the west with long court drama. It sort of mixed western marriage and dating into one.

According to Islam, women wear a headscarf to avoid arousing lust in men and making them sin. This is how it is written in religious sources. I was covered for a while and it's really hard to tolerate being covered in summer because the body doesn't breathe. I don't find it important to wear a headscarf, logically. Because I think not wearing a headscarf makes a woman more valuable. Gold and precious stones are displayed in showcases, on counters, in photographs, on posters, on bodies. This is just a small example. Valuable things are not hidden, so a woman who is valuable is not hidden.

A likely mix of men saying they shall, a bit of women having long hair and it not really a great idea for cooking over open flames, long hair working in the fields for the local Lord, a big bit of religion (puritans etc)
If you have guy friends with longish hair, they will usually wear a head thing of some description depending on what they are doing.

True, married women covered their heads, widows wore black ones to indicate their mourning and older women wore "wimpoles" (SP?) to cover up flabby necklines. Also, for the very longest time women wore a little mantilla in churches and temples out of respect for God...

@tonymetal___86 the point is women did not have value for their bodies, men had value for their bodies, literally, as they would sell them pretty much from birth and marry of circa 9-12 years old. A girl who reached 20 and unwed was on the whole worthless to men. For serfs it was much difference, as men were responsible to their Lord and the land they worked on. At that level women had no value, they were dependents of males relatives or spouses or dead. The gradual rise of the merchant classes started to erode that but the guilds heavily managed their own guild and you needed to be registered with a guild to trade. There were the odd exception such as femme sole status, where a married woman or approved by her father could be registered as femme sole and trade goods, own land, really rare though.
So back to the orginal, women were worthless unless they had important connections, zero value.

I think the hijab is very beautiful.
I guess they wear it as part of their modesty. People do say hair is linked to beauty. I think a lot of religion wear them in their own forms. Nuns, ethiopian orthodox. I think Jewish ladies wear wigs when they get married

Side note: conservative Christians in the U. S. wore these head coverings when my mom was a little girl. Definitely at church. Also when I was a kid, a lot of immigrants from Ethiopia were Christian and the adult women all wore these coverings. But the younger generations were dressing in short cut off jeans & NOT.

I've been wondering that myself but didn't dare asking them that question, so that i would not come across as arab-phobic or muslim-phobic.

I see them in Germany wearing hijabs. If they are here and don't wear hijabs, i don't think i'd figure that they are from arabic nations and don't wear hijabs.

The most I know about this is "The quran said so" and since I'm not into religion, I won't understand beyond that.

Most religions require headscarves for women to prevent them from being arousing and leading men astray. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindu, etc. it’s also to teach humility I think. Most religions are moving away from it as they’re modernizing and women are taking a more outspoken role in the community. As for Muslim women in particular, likely because they’ll be beat if they don’t.

Yes you’re correct. So, having grown up with a neighboring family that had five daughters, once the girl became “marrying age” the family went on a pilgrimage and she returned with the hijab and an “engagement promise”. I remember being really surprised and having a million questions about it bc the youngest sister was my age (and we were maybe 12/13 at the time).

She’d take it off at home, which was the safe space, but if a male visitor came in she had to put it back in again out of respect and modesty.
