I guess I'm an agnostic atheist. I don't really believe in a hell, or even an afterlife, but there's part of me thinking "what if?". I wouldn't consider myself a horrible person, but if done some questionable things in my life. Being tortured for all of eternity terrifies me. Or maybe being stuck in a strange dimension for eternity. Or maybe in the past but no one is there, and you're completely alone for all of eternity. Anyone else have these thoughts? I'm also afraid of other people going to hell. This may sound bad, but I don't even think ted bundy, or jeffery dahmer deserves that fate.

u 1 yYes, I very much do. It is for this reason that I attend Mass, confess my sins often, maintain a regular prayer life, and place my hope and trust in Christ.
If you ask me, my thought is that Hell all but blatantly implies God. The reason for this is that it makes no sense whatsoever for a supernatural being like God to be completely uninterested in what humans do, either socially, culturally, or politically. A being with supernatural knowledge would rightly not only prefer, but command certain ways of thinking, speaking, and acting. Said being would also have supernatural authority. So if someone goes to Hell, there's a reason for it, as all sins are committed primarily against God.
As for other people going to Hell? We ultimately don't know. As a Catholic, I accept what the Church teaches, which is that those who die in actual mortal sin - meaning that it is a serious matter, they know it, and they choose to commit it anyway with full knowledge and consent of the will - will descend immediately to Hell. And only God knows what is truly on someone's mind and in their heart at the moment of death.
I agree with you that i don't like the idea of people in Hell either, no matter what evil they have committed. Though I certainly believe there are those who deserve it, but it I do not have that authority. I will say this in closing: The more I believed in and accepted the traditional Catholic teachings on Hell, the more grateful I was for the graces I received in baptism and that prompted me to follow my faith more devotedly. Likewise, the more compassion and concern I felt for people and wanted them to know God's love and mercy.
I'll also note that even amongst the Saints, there are varying beliefs on how many people are in Hell. Saints Thomas Aquinas, Vincent Ferrer, Alphonsus Ligouri, and Robert Bellarmine all believed that Hell was very densely populated. Whereas Saint Francis de Sales (my Confirmation saint) was slightly more optimistic.

1 yI think God's mercy is greater than what we imagine. People are not tortured for eternity for just not believing in God. As matter of fact, there are people in hell who believed in God and prophets but never followed their instructions and instead, oppressed people, killed, raped, lied and did so many other horrible things. What is really important here is to be a good person and be kind to others. And people look for a purpose in what they do. They ask themselves, why they have to be a good person? What I mean to say here, is that, while believing in God and hell and heaven does not make you a good person unless you work on yourself and try hard to be a good person, but not believing in God and hell and heaven does not leave you much as motivation for being a good person. By being good, I don't mean lending your pen to the person next to you, or give a couple of bucks for charity!! Every single person has these sudden rushes of remorse and sympathy!! By being a good person, I mean having the motivation to stay on the side of the truth, when you know it'll make 99 percent of the population against you, when you know you have all the power in the world to become the boss, to fulfill all your fantasies at any cost, but still you stay on the side of truth and deny yourself all these pleasures to avoid hurting other people. Being a good person needs a lot of motivation and I don't know any better motivation for that except belief in the hereafter. That it doesn't matter how much you are going to suffer in this for telling the truth and being a good person, God watches it all and will reward you at the end. That nothing that you is in vain. Not believing in God, makes you depressed and lose motivation at times of hardship and temptations!!

Anonymous(25-29)1 yIf you were bad here, and caused a lot of negative energy and trauma and torture on others. You’ll come back here and be reborn.
That’s actually what happens , since rebirth was the widely held belief throughout all cultures.
Gods and Bibles are just a moral compass 🧭 for people to prevent rebirth. Just like Santa 🎅🏻 for children.
There being a creator, Father, God, not exactly real. Or he’d speak to us for all to hear. Extreme claims need extreme proof.
What has been widely studied and experienced for real; however; is rebirth and children remember past lives in complete detail to even locations and names and dates to the dot. At only the ages of 2-4. As well as people who have died for a period of time and their soul teleported to other rooms and when they returned to life, they could explain in detail how other rooms looked and the conversations had in other rooms.
Think of the karma theory. If you caused a lot of horrid acts in this experience. You’ll only able to pass onto realities or worlds that hold that same negative energy. Upper worlds, or better places , so called “heaven” will be locked for you. You can access, unless you match that energy field. You can’t access unless you have that key.
Hell and Heaven are just METAPHORS for these frequencies. Metaphors for other plains of existence.
Not necessarily that there is a DEVIL, and the opposite which is a GOD WHITE GOD. 🙄01 Reply

This is how I learned to be more agnostic myself
Anonymous(30-35)1 yYes and no. So I struggled for a long time with immense guilt. Just feeling guilty about many things in my life and truly believing I was a bad person. So thinking about the afterlife really worried me and I didn't want to go to hell. But now I believe in being more forgiving of myself and others. Life isn't an easy road. For the most part, we all try our best to be good people and to do what is morally correct and not harm others.
There is something liberating about not putting so much pressure on yourself to be "good" all the time. Let's say for argument's sake that hell does not exist. I would still hope that we all try to be decent human beings to each other even if consequences are not present. Just from a moral standpoint and doing what you KNOW is the right thing to do. I guess I do worry about what waits on the other side when life ends, but I also know that guilt can be a life sucking thing that changes how you view yourself and makes your self-esteem take a major hit.
I would say whether you are religious or not, you won't lose anything by trying to be a good person, listening to your inner conscience and letting it guide the way to a better afterlife. Whatever that may be. None of us know until we get there and we can report back these findings to the people still here. Unless there are near death experiences or other strange phenomena lol :P

The odds are too low without some intervention on behalf of that god, which would have to mean how they came up with it would need to be inexplicable without divine intervention. But it's completely explicable in terms of humanity's natural fear of death and ceaseless power struggles.
Even the concept of hell is a part of that, as its still immortality. Oblivion is more frightening. Hell is an obvious attempt by the authors to threaten those who disagree with them or otherwise challenge their power with some vague future torture, while promising the obedient and subservient some vague future bliss. They are both insubstantial promises, though. Even if the god they describe is real, if that god doesn't have the power to vet its messengers then there is no guarantee that that description will stay real. And considering all the priests that end up being child molestors I think it's safe to say their god, if it exists, does not have the power to vet it's messengers. Or, it is a god that cherishes child molesters and so I would prefer hell, which would be absent of child molesters.00 ReplyNo! I KNOW 100% that I'm never stepping foot in hell! Thank you to the wonderful Lord Jesus Christ! He came here to die to pay for our sins, so that we wouldn't have to suffer. He loves us all sm that he made a way for us to go to heaven. You don't go to heaven based off of the good or bad you do, but based off of the fact that you place your faith and trust in Christ and believe he was enough to pay for your sins. The Lord has made a simple way for us to get to heaven bc he loves us soooooo much!!! He doesn't want anyone to suffer in hell. Unfortunately we all deserve to go, and Christ knew that we were going to if we didn't have a way. So that is why he came to earth to pay for our sins. Now, those who are saved can KNOW they WILL make it into heaven! No matter how good or bad we are, because the price was paid in full already by Jesus Christ!

Even other religions use such polarization techniques to control their believers. Example is reincarnation in a desired animals like lion, cow or human while those who are "evil" of just disobedient reincarnate as rats and cockroaches.
From reference point of a god who created this universe have few evil life forms no influence on such gigantic construct. Or god just doesn't exist and everything is just a result of chaos.
00 ReplyIn the words of Shakespeare.
'Hell is empty and all the Devils are here.'
But each of us can create our own personal hell here on Earth. That's why reflection/awareness practices are important and why it's paramount to practice some kind of spiritual hygiene. We have to find ways to become the person, with courage, we are capable of. And most important, to try and find a way to appreciate life and creation rather than becoming bitter and falling into inner darkness.
This sets us up in the right way for what happens after death.
But try not to fear. Fear is a tool used to manipulate us. Having faith in God makes everything alright.

1 yI'm also agnostic, although I lean more towards believing that there is an incomprehensible power that created the universe. I do think that all human made religions are ridiculous though.
And the concept of hell (as you said... someone burning in hell for eternity based on immoral actions done in their short lifetime) is a little ridiculous.
Do I worry about going to hell? No. I think I've been a pretty decent human in my lifetime. I've made mistakes with people on occasion like any other normal human being, but that's a part of life... to make mistakes. And I'm certainly not going to hell if there is a hell for eternity.
I genuinely believe if there's a heaven, then I wouldn't be barred at the gates just for being a non believer. But regardless, I don't believe in heaven. I'm closer to believing in reincarnation.00 Reply
1 yFunny I had the same thought just cross my mind today. I log into GAG and here is this exact question about this Can’t be a coincidence.
I encourage you to just stop by a non-denominational church. The vast majority of churches are nutty zealots like some of your ANTItheist friends claim. Just try it out and see for yourself.
Jesus says he’s the only path and even though I struggled back and forth with doubt over the years I find truth when I read the Bible and attend services.
I know I am far from a saint. Yet there is something about faith that can’t be explained and needs to be explored for yourself.

1 yWell look, I don’t worry about what is after as long as my intentions are good, my heart is big, and my soul is pure.
I speak out against criminals, liars, cheaters and those who wish to do things for their own gain…. So I am certain I don’t need to worry about the afterlife.
I am honest, growing, learning, etc. and when I make a mistake, I own up to it then course correct.
Just be good, be kind, be wise, strive for more, and be the best YOU, that YOU can be. Thank you!

1 yI guess I think of it this way. I am worthy to go to Hell, full stop. That's why Jesus came from God to die for my sins. So I trust in Him, because - try as I might - I always fall short.
If my trust is misplaced, and I misunderstood what god has required of me, then I only ended up where I deserved to be in the first place.
Yet, I hold onto my trust.
40 Reply434 opinions shared on Religion & Spirituality topic. It is such an absolutely absurd concept I can't take it seriously. You would have to be the most evil mother fucker ever to exist in the multiverse to condemn someone to eternal torture. It doesn't make sense, especially when you are supposedly all powerful, all knowing and all present.. but somehow it's not your fault when things turn that shit? You're going to blame it on your creations because they are acting how you made them to act?
People can fuck ALL the way off with that shit.

@Juxtapose God gives you the choice to be with him for eternity. If you don't want to be with him, then be without him and spend eternity by yourself. Is burning in hell real? It was made for the Devil and his angels, along with the antichrist and false prophet. The Bible also mentions "They were cast into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Without the glory of God, who is light, you will be in total darkness for eternity. You won't be seeing anyone, as there will be darkness.

I don't know why I keep coming to these atheist click-bait-by-anon cluster fucks. All I can say if Christians are wrong they will never know as there is no afterlife and no God. If atheists are wrong they will surely know and wish there wasn't a god. 🙄

@Daniela1982 Pascal's Wager has been debunked before either of us was even born.
The chance of God being real or not is not a clean 50/50. Even if there is a god, which of the gods humans worship is real? How do you know you're not pissing off the wrong god by worshiping a false god? Maybe Zeus's the real god?
Anonymous(45 Plus)1 yWhen I was younger, not anymore.
I am a Christian. Even as a Christian I'll be the first to tell you even though i read the bible, I don't anymore of what happens when we die then you do. But I've lived long enough now, seen enough of God's work in mine others lives, seen what I can only define as miracles. That I trust God's word is good. That God is Just. And that my faith will be rewarded with his grace.
In the off chance I'm wrong, I have not lost anything. I die and will go to an eternal slumber without ever knowing that's where I go.
I don't think of he'll as a torturous place you're sent with Satan. I believe more in God's love than his wrath. I believe He'll is simply the absence of God. I lived for years denying God. Until I accepted his love I never knew peace. I believe the absence of God's divine presence is pain. So to live in eter ity without God is painful. And God doesn't want that for any of us.

1 yNo, since I do not believe in it. Also, even if it exists, in my interpretation Hell sounds like it could be various things with one being just nothing - the separation from God.
I'm assuming if it's real, but you are a good person, then you will likely just experience nothingness. No one knows at the end of the day.00 ReplyIf you're having "what if" moments then I think subconsciously you do believe in hell because you believe it to be a possibility. I don't believe in hell at all so it never crosses my mind. I have no worries or anxiety about going to hell. But I also don't believe in a god or any bible. I have my own personal beliefs and in it there is no eternal suffering in hell.

1 yno but I get concerned about the verses of rejection in the bible. It brings me back to the verses where jesus wants us to treat others as we'd want to be treated and care for those who have been beaten down by the world, including children and adults. the bible is clear... we are working to save souls for eternity. that is where I want to succeed but often fail.

@EmyyWolf I've lied so people I didn't like would get beaten up and I watched it, I manipulated others to do things for me that I didn't want to do, I said some of the cruellest shit to people when I found out their weakness. I am for the most part a really mean person if I don't like somebody. Which is funny because most the time I am really friendly and funny but when someone does me dirty I am very vengeful, unless I just plain don't care about the person in the slightest.
- 1 y
@EmyyWolf I wouldn't say that is the proper diagnosis xD
I don't believe in reincarnation and I will not suffer for the pieces of shits that got their due justice. I will suffer if god decides I need punishment. - 1 y
@EmyyWolf I never said I bullied or hurt people for no reason. It might have been a bit excessive but I just got vengeance on people, maybe I had to lie to get it done because people are not going to just beat someone up for you if the person only hurt you, but they all pretty much deserved what I did to them. Its just vengeance isn't really the right way to go about things and I know that.
Good news... as an atheist since you don't believe in hell it simply doesn't exist.
But if it did, and you to ended up there, you'd probably be surprised that your idea of being "a good person" and God's aren't remotely similar.

Anonymous(30-35)1 yWe are not going to Heaven for our good deeds. We all deserve hell. All of us have fallen short of the glory of God. It is through his mercy and Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection on the cross that we are redeemed. He defeated death. We have a chance at eternal life because of Him. Ask Jesus Christ into your life, accept Him as your Lord and Savior and ask for forgiveness and sin no more. We have free will and choose what path to follow. You can choose the left hand path that leads to destruction and death (spiritually) or the right hand path that leads to righteousness, eternal life, and the Truth (Jesus Christ).

1 yi do but then i always snap back to the reality of my experience with my faith that God's mercy is unfathomable. As Saint Faustina would describe it even if your sin is as dark as the night you have hope. And we don't really know what's going on in the minds of those murderers. The Divine Merct is aldo telling us that our time right bow is Time of Mercy not Time of Judgement. But yeah hell do exist. Heaven, Hell and Purgatory was described in St. Faustina's diary

1 yI believe in God and that puts me at ease of the possibility of a journey to hell. I try to live my life as a good person and recognize that I'm not perfect but don't need to be to avoid hell. I try to avoid the influence of evil thoughts doing bad things in my life while considering my actions most of the time. Again I'm no saint but I do try to be a good person. Your Intentions pave the road in the direction you're traveling.

00 ReplyGod sent his only son, Jesus into this world to pay for our sins. A price we could never pay. Jesus died on a cross for sins he did not commit. It is his blood that covers the sins of the believers so that when God looks upon us he see the blood of His Son Jesus. All Jesus wants is a relationship with us and for that he gave his life so that we could be saved and be with him. He doesn’t want anyone to go to hell but that choice is yours and not his.
00 ReplyNot anymore. When I was losing my faith I didn’t sleep for nearly a week straight because I envisioned hellfire every time I closed my eyes. After that I was a bit of a militant atheist for a while. Now I’m pretty chill, I enjoy talking about the subject and don’t fear hell fire.
