Why do people use Religion as a tool to justify homophobia?

I was talking to a coworker recently and he said he hates gay people because in the Bible God created Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. I asked what religion he belongs to and he said “no religion but it’s in the bible”

This seems like a twisted way of thinking, I believe it’s easy for people to cling onto something that validates their negative views on others.

You're confused, ANY justification can be used to hate a group. Doesn't matter if it's religion, science, class, opinion, or facts. There is no red line for what may or may not be used to support a negative view.

All that matters is that they do not use violence, or go beyond the law.

You still have people hating Muslims, Blacks and Jews on all sorts of pretentions. What makes gays so special that they must be "protected" no matter what?
