Why do religious people cry persecution when you stand up to their homophobia?

I'm bisexual, and most of the type most people don't care if I am bisexual or not; however sometimes I run into one religious person and usually they are homophobic by saying; all sins are equal and then say I don't support the lifestyle choice of gay people; however when I say I don't believe in christ as I am pagan, so that sin doesn't apply to me and I don't support their lifestyle choice to be straight; they get bent out of shape and cry some form persecution.

It is the way they defend victimizing other people. . . by playing the victim. I mean, we all know the argument is disingenuous. But many homophobes, don't really have the courage or the integrity to just state their beliefs. There is always some disingenuous lie they spin to make their nonsense seem plausible.

It is like the strategy of plausible deniability.
