What is a cult that we’ve been made to believe is not a cult?

Obviously a lot of religions adapt cult-like ideas in order to further their power, Christianity and their love of rituals being one such example, but I’m not talking about religions. I’m thinking of things like sports, or maybe even the army.

I won't cite politics since it's already VERY obvious lol. You reminded me of an old sociology class, it's very far in my memory but I do remember we studied firemen and military police institutions, in France. And how they do have characteristics reminiscent of cults. You'll certainly find a lot of data in anything academic sociology, your question must have been studied a lot already

Christianity. It's literally a cult offshoot of monotheistic Judaism, similar to how Islam is a cult offshoot of both.
