What is the meaning of Luke 14:26?

"If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple."

"hatred everyone else" to be his disciple? This doesn't sound right.

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."

I take it that you have to put God/Jesus first. The first priority of your life.

Jesus said many times "Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me". Denying of yourself is putting God's laws and commands first and his plan and to put away all of your selfish wants and desires.

Humanity is in full blown rebellion. People do not deny themselves ANYTHING. Every sexual desire, sex with anyone they want, sex with the same sex, men changing themselves into women, swingers, open relationships, endless porn consumption and making porn, getting drunk as a sport, divorce at any whim, aborting babies, sex outside of marriage, endless broken homes.

Humanity feels enlightened and so wise. No one denies themselves anything.

So, if your family is against God's laws, if your own desires and lusts are against God's laws you have to be willing to put yourself and others 2nd to the commands of God.

Jesus told his followers to be terrorists.

They must be willing to fight their own families if they become pagan, or deviated from The Word.

It means putting God above everything else. For example, if your dad threatens to disown you if you go to bible college because he doesn’t want you to go, but God wants you to go to bible college, then you go. Even if it means losing your relationship with your dad, you choose God first always.

To me this is most relevant in this generation: when people falsly accuse Christians who criticise sinners, by "Christians hate" whoever, based on criticism... Do the things that THEY call hate... also Parents, who are not Christians who say "if you join a church you hate us" Do the things that THEY call hate.

so we must "by comparison" be willing to stand firmly when accused of "hating your parents". That hate as they misuse the word, we must do despite the word, to not be manipulated, not to say "we don't hate so we will not criticise". Or "i can't hate my parents so i will obey them". Do the things that THEY call hate.

Like the parables surrounding those verses, in context Jesus is teaching the house of a rich Pharisee. What he is teaching is that following Him and becoming a disciple means that you no longer treasure things you can gain on Earth. Means that your entire motivation in life shouldn’t be to accumulate money or make the most friends and be famous or gain power and be a king.


He’s saying in otter to follow Him, one must take up their own cross next to Jesus and be willing to give up all their earthly desires and possessions. That the Kingdom of God in Heaven is worth so much more than any treasure you can find on Earth. And those who spend their lives only trying to gain Earthly possessions are not following the teachings of God.



Again the context of this chapter is important because Jesus is among rich men (Pharisees) and he’s trying to educate them by the use of parables that their current lives of being rich are not getting them closer to heaven at all.

Verse 17 :

“At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’”

After that Jesus teaches of 3 Kenn who had excuses and could not attend the banquet. Like one man couldn’t attend as he was getting married (verse 20).

The banquet is Heaven and we are all called to prioritize Jesus first in our lives. Therefore if a man was to put his wife first and deny Jesus, saying he’s getting married.. that’s him loving things on Earth more than Jesus Christ and that means he can’t be at the great banquet
