Back when I was in 9th grade, I went to this youth group night at the Baptist church my friend went to with his parents. He wanted to see this girl and wanted me to ride with him on our bikes across town to the church. His mom ended up dropping us off and when we went in, the youth pastor really started up with the fire and brimstone speeches. Yelling things like “If you don’t accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior then you are damned to burn in hell forever!!!" The teenagers were eating it up and shouting “amen!”, which fueled the pastor’s fury even more. Things got weird, and I suddenly realized that I was stuck in the middle of a crazy cult meeting and I had to get away from these people. I told my friend “dude let’s get the fuck out of here" and he wanted to wait until it was over so he could see the girl. I waited but it felt like I was stuck in the middle of a room full of zombies or something. If that pastor would have saw me and said “this guy’s not crazy for Jesus, everybody attack him !” They would have done it for sure.

I grew up in the church. Father was a southern Baptist preacher. I was never comfortable in church, never wanted to go because I had to dress up and pretend. I also didn’t like being in a room with a lot of people. I couldn’t tell you anything my dad preached.

Yes, I’ve experienced something like that before. I’ve been in a church where everything looked perfectly normal from the outside, but the atmosphere just felt uncomfortable to me. I couldn’t really explain it. Nobody was doing anything obviously wrong, but I felt tense and wanted to leave.

Maybe it was just my own instincts or the mood of the people around me, so I wouldn’t automatically call it something spiritual. But I do think sometimes you can walk into a place and immediately feel that something just isn’t right.

I’m curious if anyone else has experienced that feeling in a church, and what happened afterward.
