Michigan middle schoolers sue for right to wear ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ gear

Two Michigan middle schoolers sued their school district on Tuesday for barring gear featuring the slogan “Let’s Go Brandon.”

The students, who were ordered by school administrators to remove their “Let’s Go Brandon” gear — which is a derogatory phrase targeted toward President Biden — allege that the Tri County Area Schools violated the First Amendment by discriminating against political expression that is positive toward former President Trump or negative toward Biden.

“Criticism of the president is core political speech protected by the First Amendment,” the students’ attorney, Conor Fitzpatrick, said in a statement. “Whether it’s a Biden sticker, ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ sweatshirt, or gay pride T-shirt, schools can’t pick and choose which political beliefs students can express.”

The lawsuit notes that students at the school have been permitted to “wear apparel expressing other political and social messages, including but not limited to apparel expressing support for LGBTQ+ rights.”

The Tri County Area Schools has previously argued that the “Let’s Go Brandon” gear violated its prohibition against clothing and styles of expression that are “vulgar and profane.”

“The commonly known meaning of the slogan ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ is intended to ridicule the President with profanity,” the district said. “‘Let’s Go Brandon’ is a transparent code for using profanity against the President.”

The “Let’s Go Brandon” slogan emerged from a 2021 NASCAR event, in which a television commentator misheard an “F— Joe Biden” chant from the crowd as “Let’s Go Brandon.”

The federal judge who suspended the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of an abortion pill failed to disclose two interviews on a Christian radio show where he discussed his extremist views on contraception and gay rights, CNN reported Thursday.
U. S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee, invalidated the FDA’s approval of mifepristone earlier this month, using the language of anti-abortion activists in his ruling. He was confirmed to a lifetime appointment in 2019 by the Senate and was required at the time to submit a detailed account of his previous writings and public appearances.

But CNN uncovered two appearances on a radio show called “Chosen Generation” from 2014 while he was working as deputy general counsel at a religious liberty advocacy group called First Liberty Institute. In one interview from February 2014, Kacsmaryk was asked about the “homosexual agenda,” agreeing with the host that those opposed to same-sex marriage could be viewed as “hostile” enemies of the federal government and saying the nation had adopted “very permissive” policies on contraception.
In another appearance that July, he said religious organizations could face difficulty for opposing “the new sexual orthodoxy” on gay rights.

I felt like I was being singled out because of his tone from after I told him I could not find it. He tried to make it clear again where it is at, and then he asked me if I wanted him to take a look for me (because he buys tons of food for the family), I let him take a look in the fridge and he pointed out to where I could find it (he asked me another question before so), and I felt very embarrassed and treated like a child, and I told him that he prioritizes himself and not me. I felt like I was the one being the asshole because I threatened to call my biological father (47M - American of Jordanian descent) over the situation, and he did return the call and told me, "It's how guys talk," and started to ask me questions as to whether my stepdad is a "real man" or a "feminine gay guy" or "transgender". I felt pressured to answer, I hung up on him, I did not return his call the first time but I did the second. I also forced my stepdad to talk to my own dad, and he said he did not want to. Admittedly, I yelled at him, and he told me to "stop talking to that way" (in his stereotypical tough-guy tone). I slammed my right foot on the ground, but then my dad wanted a private talk with me outside.

My stepdad returned to the TV and was watching romantic drama, and he was also on the phone with someone. He said, when my mother (47M - Armenian-American of Lebanese birth) comes home from work, have her talk to him. My stepdad was the one person bringing up a lot of these situations from the past (and the recent past, and the very far past) about how I prejudged his Christian faith because of his attitude towards not only me, but also my own mother and my brother. At first he banned my brother from ever being exposed to the word "gay", and he also had very questionable views on gay people and the colors purple and pink (and my mom also has questionable views on trans people - so this is a norm in both my immediate and extended families).
