Why do people like to be judgmental until they are on the receiving end of being judged?

For example, I am a former alcoholic and I am celebrating 3 years of being sober with no smoking or drinking. I attend church for myself and not to please my family or anyone else and most of the time no one really judges me for being a former addict. However, once in a while I do get a judgmental bigot who loves to quote scripture at me and tell me I am going to hell for defiling my body in the first place. So I always tell these same bigots that even the devil quotes scripture and they always go their separate way and I have never seen them in my church since that negative encounter. It just bugs me that people are so judge mental of sins and temptations they don't go through. What I also can't stand is how most christians are so judgmental of gay people even though most of the gay people I know don't go around and have sex with any man or woman that crosses their path. it is like these people have an idea that two men having sex is unnatural and even if they are having sex it is none of the christians business on who does what with their sex life or life outside of church. Its like everyone is critical of temptations they don't go through and the moment they are on the receiving end of criticism of sin then they shut up and say how they should not be judged.
