Why do people always say that you should love and respect your parents?

People so often assume in passing conversation that parents are worthy of respect just by virtue of being your parents and that you should always love them and respect them, no matter what?

What if they are bossy, strict, obsessive, authoritarian and they constantly berate you all the time (for example, they tell you "you're a worthless lazy b** that will never do anything in your life"), yell at you or are sarcastic, whenever you say something they don't agree with, instead of having a conversation and arguing their opinion. Isn't respect a two-way street?

Yes!! You are so right that respect is earned. I lost my dad when I was 12 I respected him because he treated me like a person not an animal. When he died my mother and sister abused me my sister is 5 years older than I am. They both beat me on a daily basis I had an aunt at the time who told me that I should respect both my mother and sister that they knew I needed to be punished because boys are bad in her opinion. I always hated it when people told me I should respect my mother just because she's my mother. I don't think so!

They've likely put 20 years of live, address, and money into you and the playback is support and respect in their older years.

Or that's the unspoken deal.

The reality is that at 45 you can see them for the people they are. If they are a negative influence in your life, maybe you don't want to be around them. Although emotionally, you may be driven to be.

My age isn't 45+... The thing is no one asked them to pay jackshit... Also, just because they fed you some soup, this means they have the right to talk to you and treat you this way? Respect is gained, no one deserves it because they hold a certain title, or belong in a certain group
