Earlier this month, white representatives in the Mississippi House approved a bill to create a new district—that includes all of the majority-white neighborhoods in Jackson, a capital city that is 83 percent Black. This includes creating a criminal justice system for the district, overseen by an all-white power base.

Under House Bill 1020, the white conservative chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court would handpick the new district’s two supervising judges; its prosecutors and public defenders would be chosen by the state’s white Republican attorney general

State Rep. Trey Lamar, the white Republican who sponsored the bill, lives in and represents a majority-white district more than two hours away from Jackson. (He holds a seat once held by his grandfather, Leon Hannaford, whose legacy includes introducing a 1962 bill to tighten residency requirements for college students, which a local paper at the time reported, “would have kept Negro James Meredith from filing suit to enter the University of Mississippi.”) In various statements on the House floor and in an op-ed from last weekend, the legislator has insisted that HB 1020, by adding unelected judges to Hinds County’s courts, will help clear up lengthy case backlogs, while an expanded Capitol Police force will address a spike in crime in Jackson, allowing his constituents to “feel safe when they come” to the capital.

A GOP lawmaker wrote a one-sentence bill to abolish the Department of Education. His reasoning doesn't address student loans, grants, or any of the major things the department does.

It'll probably take more than one sentence to get rid of a federal agency — but one Republican lawmaker is trying that route anyway.

Last week, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie introduced a bill to abolish the Education Department, and it's a short, one-sentence read: "The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2022."

When Insider asked Massie how abolishing the department would impact programs and laws that specifically rely on the department, he said that "unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D. C. should not be in charge of our children's intellectual and moral development."

"States and local communities are best positioned to shape curricula that meet the needs of their students. Schools should be accountable," he said. "Parents have the right to choose the most appropriate educational opportunity for their children, including home school, public school, or private school."

When Insider followed up regarding the impact eliminating the department would have on Pell Grants, student loans, and other financial aid operations, Massie's office did not respond.

Congress recently approved a $1.7 trillion budget for the government, including $79.6 billion for the Education Department. Of that funding, $45 billion is going to K-12 programs, with the majority allocated to grants for low-income neighborhoods and special-education programs, and about $30 billion is going to higher education and federal student aid funding, including loans and Pell Grants.

So if the department were to be eliminated, those programs would either be gone — or transferred to a new agency, which would preclude the budgetary savings that Republicans are hoping for.

Charlie Kirk Claims Ohio Derailment Is Proof of ‘War on White People’

Far-right provocateur Charlie Kirk insisted on Tuesday that the train derailment that caused a toxic chemical scare in eastern Ohio proves the Biden administration is waging a “war against white people.”

Pointing to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s slow response to the crisis, Kirk, who also leads the MAGA youth group Turning Point USA, claimed on his podcast that this has all been part of an anti-white plan.

“So, why is it that they kind of shrug their shoulders and they say, yeah, okay, whatever? It’s very simple,” he exclaimed. “It’s because the war on white people continues. Why would you care for the white working-class voters in eastern Ohio? You haven't cared about them [for] other reasons or other portions.”

Kirk then floated a hypothetical about a majority-minority city as evidence of his flimsy theory.

“I will prove it to you,” the pro-Trump pundit bellowed. “If this train derailment happened in downtown Atlanta in the densely populated Black neighborhoods, this would be the number one news story. It would be Flint water crisis 2.0. There would be clamoring and activism and talks for reparations.”

Kirk then brought up Buttigieg’s recent comments about the racial disparities in infrastructure and construction jobs, remarks that were quickly seized upon by right-wing media. The TPUSA founder said this proved he was correct to sound the alarm about a supposed Democratic hatred of white Americans.

“Buttigieg is out talking about how workers are too white,” he breathlessly declared. “For the last couple of years, I have been warning about this crusade against white people. And people shrug their shoulders, say, oh, Charlie, why does that matter?”
