Why Inclement Weather Excites Me

Living in Florida I get to experience my fair share of bad weather. Thunderstorms, hail, heavy wind are all the norm. It was during hurricane Irma last year that I realized why I get so excited during bad weather.

I believe it comes from two places.

The first being the feeling of something bigger happening. It is something completely out of our control that we have to be put through and experience. It is almost as if I feel the power of God or something.

The other is a feeling I get surrounding major storms such as hurricanes or blizzards when I lived up north. It is the realization that something is happening that has changed the entire world around me albeit temporarily. Everyone is thinking about it, talking about it, and experiencing the same fears and concerns as me. Everywhere you go you see it. You feel it. And you can't escape it.

I think this is similar to the way holidays work. At Christmas the entire world around you changes for an event. It effects peoples style, attitude, shopping habits, and culture. A hurricane changes the culture of the entire world within my perspective and I find it to be quite a rush. The preparation that goes into it. The idea of fun I may have with my family once the power goes out. The rush of possibly having to fight to survive. It is exciting, and I like it.

Now, I know that these storms are bad. I am saddened at the loss of life and quality of life that happened in Puerto Rico so I don't wish this on anyone. But I still can't get over the joy I get from the threat of an incoming storm.
