The Founding Fathers are great because they had created something that has lasted almost 250 years so far. Granted, not an Egyptian dynasty of a few thousand years but give it time. Did some have slaves? Yes. Is it fair to judge them by some of today's misguided mores? No. Should the history of The United States be revered? Yes. Even the low points. Should history be censored in any way? No. Learn from the past to grow in the future.
Keep in mind most of these people owned slaves and raped them, and some of them they raped were 10-16 years old. In Florida they would use black babies as alligator bait, they would put slaves in zoos and pelts rocks at them, they would lynch and torture them for fun. That is not conforming with times that is pure evil.
@Cheesebread997 Not all, or even most, treated people that way. If you want people to work you can't feed their babies to alligators or torture them for fun.
@zagor your trying to sugar coat slavery and that’s not ok. There’s not such thing as typical. All those people were treated like garbage because of their skin color. Your lying to yourself if you think “most people didn’t treat them that way”. Read a damn book
@Cheesebread997 True. But in the context of the time, rich people in the South had slaves, at least if they had a farm.
And some Native American groups left old people out to die in the cold. The Spartans killed infants with physical defects. Were they all horrible people?
I'm not trying to sugarcoat it at all. I'm trying to point out that it wasn't realistic to expect George Washington to ban slavery via executive order as his first act as President, as some people seem to expect. There were a lot of people disgusted by slavery back then, but the owners held enormous influence in the South.
Yes, everyone is flawed. We celebrate the ideals they represent. No one is looking at Washington and interpreting his prominence as advocation for slavery. If that’s not good enough for you then consider that relative to the people of the time indeed they were heroes with great ideas, and they would go on to inspire all the civil rights we have today.
Yes, all of them were wealthy individuals who faced severe losses both financial and more for the sake of their country. What they gave up to make it all work for the rest of us is immense.
Africa was also filled with people practicing slavery. It was a thing, at that time, and it was a thing way before. You can't exactly judge people of the past with today's standards. They lived in a time when it was the normality
Dude the founding fathers weren't heroes regardless of slaves.
I'm not saying they're like inherently terrible people, but the Constitution was made to specifically keep the people from power, and keep the power in the hands of elites.
Absolutely, because they founded the country and allowed us to get to where we are today. The simple minded conclusion from very questionable sources doesn't change that.
The term "hero" is overused to the point of being meaningless. At this point, anyone brave enough to answer this question is considered a hero, and I hope we all die as a result
yes, they set things up in a way that would eventually lead to the civil war and freeing of the slaves. they knew that if they tried to force the issue right after revolution the country would never have survived.

I would say yes, like all historical figures, they will be at odds to modern times. BUT Confederate statues are of traitors who fought for slavery that were erected by anti-civil rights activists.
Well the way I look at it, Homer was just an oral presenter. Not a bad guy or anything, but not exactly heroic. Caesar overturned the Republic in Rome in favor of an empire, and silenced his political enemies. Alexander overturned many cultures and didn't conquer out of some noble need. Cleopatra interacted with Caesar and led to the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. They seem like grey area historical figures to me

They were hero’s in some ways, but they were also horrible people in other ways and I think we have to acknowledge both sides
Horrible? I think it is more they were conforming with the times.

@zagor just because it was during “those times “ doesn’t change the fact that they were horrible people in other ways.
The only difference is that their behavior was deemed “acceptable” doesn’t make it right
@Cheesebread997 Not all, or even most, treated people that way. If you want people to work you can't feed their babies to alligators or torture them for fun.
@zagor lmaoo “okay”
@Cheesebread997 Some people seem to have trouble differentiating between "extreme examples" and "typical".
@zagor no whether it’s extreme or not it’s still bad. That’s my point

Guess we can't read Lovecraft's books because he's a racist.
People today man..

yea, we are heroes for the extrordinary things we do not the negative things
anyone could own slaves, most did. but they did something that nobody else could do
I would say yes, like all historical figures, they will be at odds to modern times. BUT Confederate statues are of traitors who fought for slavery that were erected by anti-civil rights activists.
It's insane how America sucks the dicks of those historical figures that were POS degenerates up to 300 years ago.
Like we don't learn the names of our prime ministers and shit like that, and we certainly don't effectively worship them
were the heroes Ulysses, Homer, Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra? they also had slaves
Were any of these guys heroes?
@Antelope yes

idiots keep looking at the past instead of seeing the changes made since
Heroes.
At that time owning other human beings was the culture.
No, they were horrible people. Just like conservatives and Trumpers are today.
Would be happy to hear of your personal experiences in the early 1800's.
@zagor Would be happy to hear of your struggles with learning to read.
I've read since I was 3. You?
@zagor when did you begin to comprehend what you read? More than 6 months ago?
That's OK, just keep up with your little safe thoughts and I'm sure no one will disturb you with nasty things like logic and reality.
There is no heroes or villains in hisotry. Only power fading from one person to another.
Yes, the sheeple are being brainwashed.
Yep.
