u Absolutely, it happens every single day. I learned that this year while doing a teaching practicum at a high school. Schools are just like any other work place - teachers are going to gossip about their colleagues and support staff like custodians etc, as well as their students. I've never heard the "who's dating who" kind of conversations (yet, lol), but most of the stuff I've heard is about a student's behaviour during class/on school property, who's smoking, who comes to class high, who has bad grades, who the overachievers are, who put dumb answers on their test, all that kind of stuff. It made me think back to my high school days and now I know that teachers were talking about me for sure (I never did anything bad, though).
When teachers talk about students in front of other students, that's when it becomes unprofessional. What goes on in the staff room, stays in the staff room.
This is not normal or common. Usually teachers gossip about each other. I remember hearing my art teacher laugh in high school teacher and telling this other teacher that she's been a "bad girl" - like sleeping around with some hot guy or possibly woman (I think she might have been lesbian) - strange things happen with teachers.
Yes, I'm a behavior specialist for a school and I always hear the teachers gossip about the students. Heck, sometimes they tell me the low down of the kids. It's amusing. It is unprofessional, but what do you expect?
Unless a student's behavior is particularly egregious or the student stands out in some way perhaps through their classroom brilliance, teachers do not discuss their students. There are just too too many students to focus on one or two. Yes they have favorites at times and they have concern for the well-being of others. Consider the details of classroom management and education of at last 100 kids. And then there are parents. You'd go crazy like some teachers, huh?
