Why do people hate the French so much?

Question

I'm not a very touchy person, but I'm just curious. I am French and always hear things about the French being scared, lazy, and smokers... Those are not the only things I hear, but they are some.

Chess players that play 1. e4 usually want sharp, tactical endeavors. By playing 1... e6 (the French Defence), you kind of ruin their fun. And there's really no good way to deal with it as White.

There IS this one line in the Tarrasch Variation (which in general is sharper and more tactical, so one you should play if you're one of those folks) - it goes 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. e5 Nd7 5. Bd3 c5 6. c3 Nc6 7. Ngf3? Qb6 8. O-O cxd4 9. cxd4 Nxd4 10. Nxd4 Qxd4 and White is one pawn down but has fierce compensation for the lost pawn and will have a huge initiative. Even the engine rates this line as slightly better for White and chess engines typically are pretty materialistic, so this is one line that French players are very scared of and therefore, there is one way to decline this gambit White can play, by instead of playing 7... Qb6, some players play 7... Be7 and an interesting alternative where Black can equalize easily is 7... a6! 8. O-O g5! and Black will play 9... g4! next.

There are some sharp lines in the Winawer as well, but Black doesn't have to play it and can instead can always go for the Classical Variation. Basically, the reason many people hate playing against the French is that Black is steering the game towards his/her comfort zone and there's really not much White can do about it. And if one really doesn't know what they're doing and goes for the Advance Variation, that can be tricky because that's the variation French players typically regard as the easiest to play against because they get so much counterplay.

That's why people hate playing against the French so much. :)

The French are also said to be immoral. When Hollande was caught cheating on his girlfriend even the leader of your facist party thought the media was infringing on his privacy. That would not be the reaction in America. The perception is that you surrendered too quickly to the Nazis as well. I personally hate your philosophers all that existentialism and postmodernism.

I lived in France (not in Paris but in a small city) for about 6 months and especially the French girls (not all but most of them) were so terrible and arrogant! French guys were nice to me only when they wanted to sleep with me or whatever (at least I got to have some conversations). But in general, I think that French girls just want to get the attention on them so they talk shit about everything and everyone, are not really interested in getting to know other people from other countries. I noticedd that most young people in France are not that friendly (except when they are drunk). Maybe its because I'm from a Balkan country and I'm used to living in big cities but there was a huge cultural difference. I even started some depression pills in my last month because of their behaviour.

Only w old French teacher was nice. I had an old white guy saying they piss the shit inthe streets and don't care if its in public.

They are cold and pushy in general. I had personal dealings with them at work. They kept talking in French and didn't bother to mingle. Rudest ethnics of all.

If they gonna migrate to another country and act like its France. Go back to their own country.

The French are renowned for being rude, having been to France a few times I can say it does seem to be true. They are rather abrupt and short with people...

The French are just like other people from other nationalities. People are people, black, white, French, Russian, Chinese, Muslims and Christians. We are all human so some of us are lazy, killers, joker, businesses men, good husbands, whatever. By the way, I don't hate or like the French, I just see them as people from France who speak French lol.

Francophobia does seem to be quite common for some reason. Personally, I don't hate French people but I don't like France because they are quite xenophobic, like any other Western country really.
