I just spent a week in the French West Indies, and didn't experience any of this French assholeness I'm always hearing about, including from the notorious French waitresses. Both locals and Metropolitan French, everyone was so polite, helpful and respectful. One girl and another guy even translated menus for us. Only time was when some people were shoving onto the ferry, but other than that. Even when I was standing in a place I wasn't supposed to, the guy told me politely, whereas Americans and Asians just start shouting at me.
Some even started small talk themselves and were happy that we even knew a few words. So many spoke English and even if they didn't, they still tried to help us. And no one made fun of me for speaking bad French. I said "Cest jolie" instead of "Trez jolie" and the lady just corrected me, but was impressed I even knew Jolie. A lot of times we just couldn't understand each other when we were saying place names, because we pronounce them so differently, but other than that. And they spoke good English too, the ones who did. I was surprised.
I'm pretty sure there were some black people who were talking shit about us, but aside from that, I think this was one of the only places where we had no negative interaction with anyone. Even the black people were so nice and helpful. And even the airport staff and the infamous French waitresses.
So yeah, I don't know why everyone says French people are assholes.
I saw a girl recently post on Instagram, that France was the friendliest country she visited and people were laughing at her, but I agree.
