Is it appropriate to burp at work?

Just a general inquiry here, doyou think its appropriate to burp while at work?

I just recently got myself in a spot of trouble for burping quietly in my cubicle, after eating. My supervisor heard me, and told me that wasn't ladylike, and when i lightly joked it off, she flat out told me to stop, saying it wasn't appropriate.

u obviously didn't do it loudly and intentionally so she should back off before she finds herself in trouble for harassment. lol. They can't fire you for burping. Or for farting either. I mean, if it's a right to work state, technically they can. But you could easily file and win a harassment suit if that were to happen due to it's commonality in every day life. She just sounds like a cranky bitch in my opinion.

@Paris13 yeah but something like that, she can say her boss has been harassing her in the workplace. That's not acceptable behavior and won't be protected in the "right to work" states either. A boss harassing an employee for natural bodily functions would be a pretty good lawsuit. :)

I mean, it depends on the environment. Most big corporate environments wouldn't love it, but at the same time if you're being quiet about it there should be no problem.

Small offices of course can be different and depend on the personality of the boss.

It's a normal bodily function, not something you can help. So of course, it's appropriate when you need to (though I'd say that forcing yourself to burp and having burping competitions and things like that would be inappropriate because they're not very professional) because why put yourself through the discomfort of holding it back?

I work in an office at a big company and burp at my cubicle. I try to be a little more quiet than I am at home, but still, it's a natural body function and I'm not the only one who does it there. Obviously I wouldn't do it in a meeting or something, but if you just had lunch and have to burp, then do it.

Burping quietly after eating i dont see as that big of a deal. I mean its kinda the same as sneezing. If its a loud obnoxious burp then yeah thats not totally appropriate.

I never really figured out how to hold in a burp so... I hope it's not inappropriate. It's never been a problem where I've worked before, but then I've never had an office job. I do always cover my mouth at work too to make it quieter.

Oh, more than appropriate. I think it’s appropriate to fart at work too. Hell, I do both all the time. It’s natural and they can’t stop you from doing it.

It depends on how talented is this person. Obnoxiously loud, offensive burps are not ok unless the person announces it a few seconds before.

I think it's better not to burp at work bc it's a professional setting, but burping isn't really something we can control, so it's fine. I try my best not to burp at work, but a lot of times I haven't been able to control it and I've just burped
