If I'm a guest at someone's house, is it rude to sleep on the couch or on your husband?

There is a certain individual in my family who always sleeps on people's couches when she is a guest in their house. She'll either sleep on the couch or she'll sleep on her husband.

I always get irritated when she does that, but I seem to be the only one? Or maybe no one talks about it? But is it rude? Is that proper etiquette?

One time we were at someone's house and it was a dinner party with 30 people. She went to lay down on the 3-seater couch and fell asleep. Since she took up the entire couch, there was less space for everyone else to sit, so a lot of people were just standing. I got really annoyed, but it wasn't my place to say anything. I think that's her husband's responsibility.

We're all in our mid 30's so I feel like this behavior is extremely inappropriate. Am I wrong?

It's not rude at all. She could sleep wherever and whenever she wants.

I think there's two sides to this. One side is that yeah what she's doing is causing an I convince and in that sense you could easily say it's rude or poor etiquette. On the other side if you step away from the situation a little and look at the bigger picture here is it really that big of an issue. It's not like she's damaging property or hurting people. She's not sexually assaulting guests. She's sleeping. And If anyone had been using the couch she wouldn't have been able to lay across all of it. There had to be a time in the night when absolutely no one but her was using it. It may be rude but I mean is it really something to waste your energy over is it really something worth giving up your enjoyment of the party to deal with. As a former frat guy who had people passing out on our couches all the time I can promise you it's not worth it. Letter sleep shake it off and go enjoy everyone else. Honestly to me It sounds like you really just don't like her in general and this is just a little extra icing on the hate cake.

omg I can't stand her, and every little thing she does is super irritating and annoying. I keep trying to like her but it's been super difficult... maybe I should just accept that I don't like her and possibly never will...

I'm not sure if it's inappropriate, I think that depends on whether this is considered acceptable behaviour by your family as a whole. Some of my friends' families are a bit like that, which I always find strange, but it never seems to bother anyone - so I guess people are different.

Personally I would find it both very weird and quite rude, if she was that tired, maybe it would be better for her to rest properly before attending parties? Or just not go at all? Or find some bedroom to nap in, if it is really that urgent. Also... why is she always so tired in the first place?

at first i thought you meant when she's a guest over night. i didn't realize you meant during the party. if she's always doing this maybe she should see a doctor? lol she shouldn't always be so tired!

Does this person have a drinking problem? It's kinda strange in generally to wander over to the couch during the middle of dinner and go to sleep.

if you are staying at someone's house and expect to sleep on the couch you have to
1. go to bed after everyone else has gone to sleep
2. wake up before everyone else is up

that is simple etiquette and if you can't abide by it you should find somewhere or someplace else to sleep

Yeah that would be okay if it was a sleep over! It's never a sleep over.. it's always in the middle of the day when we're having dinner. I thought I was the only one who thought it was inappropriate. Thanks for your response!

I mean honestly I don’t fine it that rude, but I guess that’s just how my family is. When my family has get togethers and/or events at a house at LEAST one of us are bound to fall asleep lol but we’re all very comfortable with each other. BUT if you were let’s say at a friends house or with some people u don’t really know nor comfortable with then yeah I’d consider that rude
