Personally hate the race thing. Ethnicity makes more sense to me. I know a few somalis and a lot of them do not look like your stereotypical "black person". Grouping people into the "black" group is faaaaar too broad its unbelievable. Apparently Africans are black, but I don't get how people fail to see the immense diversity among the African people.
And talking about black people, what about the ones from Asia, such as New Papua Guinea? assets.survivalinternational.org/.../...screen.jpg An average person from the west would probably assume he's a black man from Africa most likely but he is not, he even has the stereotypical afro textured hair, but he is NOT closely related to Africans. Thats why race is so stupid to be honest. We're the human race, but we're made up into different ethnicities which sets us apart by appearance and build, not by skin colour. Anyhow, Somalis are somalis, nothing more nothing less.
Just stop trying to define other people and put them in some box. Every race has an entire range of looks, and its rare these days anyway to find someone with pure blood in any race. If someone wants to be Italian, black, white, whatever, let them be. Let them claim whatever. It's their life, their ancestory, no one else has a right to decide for them, especially not based on what someone else thinks a certain race looks like. That's stupid.
East Africans from Somalia. Djibouti, Ethiopia... Do look different from lets say west Africans, but they are still black. Africa is a big continent and not all Africans have the same features.
Black and white isn't a race. It's a description of color pigmentation. Indian is a race or ethnicity. Somali is an ethnicity. But white and black the terms are just colors, not races.
that doesn't make sense, for example an albino from tanzania would still be black (negroid?), not suddenly white (caucasian) just because his pigment is albino since he would still have tanzanian facial features and cranium. black and white are the PC terms of 2 races different negroid and caucasoid. (not that i believe any of that crockshit)
When people say white, they usually mean European. But not all Europeans are white or even have similar facial traits aside from skin tone. It's a non specific description.
Similarly, black is a nonspecific description other than to describe pigmentation. But if you asked, do you think this somali person is (negroid) that would be more specific to saying do you think they have African genetics.
hm, good point. somalis are black anyways, a lot of us are very dark skinned like near pitch black and seems to me that it's obvious to everyone else. wtf is wrong with the people in my class then? smh, england is so weird.
Wtf is this question? Their texture is non black? And I guess nappy is the only texture a black person's hair can be huh. Bruh I'm so glad I'm comfortable in my skin. This site will make a weak minded person hate themselves.

the question was caused by a class argument between other black people and somalis on whether we're "black enough" , it wasn't meant to cause self hate. sorry if it made you feel that way :( where i live there's a big fracture between somalis and other black people (jamaicans, nigerians) which makes me wonder if they're even considered black by third parties. i know no one in my area considers somalis black but rather just "somalis" which is lowkey used as an insult like the word "pakis".
yes they are black, 1.) they are African 2.) that hair length is not uncommon to blacks in Africa only in America, my aunt has her hair to her back. half Filipino? nah that look is common Google the fulani , a tribe in Nigeria and Angolan people as well, and of course the big lips which are a characteristic of all us blacks. if they do not want to be identified as black the option to bleach is always there.

This exemplifies the absolute ridiculousness of the idea of race. Are they black if they don't have ratty hair? Are they black if their hair is soft and silky? Better question: why does it matter? Does being black make a difference on what kind of person you are? It really shouldn't matter at all.

that's what i'm asking, i got into an argument with someone today because he said there were no "real black people" in our college class. there were around 6 somalis there looking at him like :/ and it started a really interesting debate
That's another phrase that I can't stand: "Not a real (insert race here)". That is ironically racist: as though there are qualifiers for race, meaning that if you are of a certain race, you must only act a certain way. It's like when people were trashing Russell Wilson because he didn't "act black enough". At what point does a color become a subculture? I am fine with labels like thug and preppy and ghetto and spoiled etc., or even saying someone is Somalian because that is their culture, but when it's about where they are native to or what their physical appearance is like, it's frustratingly annoying.
a lot of somalis are darker than the average jamaican because we aren't mixed like a lot of jamaicans are, we are closer to the equator hence have darker skin but it's always the hair issue that makes the naysayers say nay. majority of somalis i know fill in black in the census, we are black but the question is why are stereotypes the default of what a certain race should be?
They all look black to me. To be honest I dont really care enough to distinguish, so if you are from Sub-Saharan Africa and your skin isn't white, you are black. I am not PC and I am not going to attempt to be, they are all black.

To be honest I dont know, I dont understand either. The PC people are all about not being racist, but they are totally stereotyping over a billion people by the color of the skin. Seems pretty hypocritical if you ask me... of course I am not PC so I can do whatever I want, but they should be held to a higher standard since they are the ones harassing others about not being racist.
They are considered black but yes, you are not wrong about how their features tend to be a bit different from blacks of other areas. There is diversity in every race.

The wonderfulness of being black so many hues and shades of black, some are blacker than some, but yes they are black and beautiful people.

middle eastern, a guy in class insisted on that. he was refusing to acknowledge that somalis are blacker than most black americans who are usually ~25% not black. whole class debate on it and i was wondering you guys' opinion
