I often hear the expression good hair when it is in reference to straight hair.
Particularly by people of black community, relatives of the person or older folks when commenting on children of interracial couples where one person hair is curly (usually African) and the other parent hair is straight.
What i want to know is why we consider straight hair as good hair while curly hair is considered bad hair?

And i think this might be true on a subconscious level to a lot more peoples seeing people all races prefer to straighten their hair than have it curly.

No idea I don't think it is. I think women believe it is and since so many women do it that so many men just subconciously attribute long straight hair to femininity. Same goes with blondes, women seem to always dye their hair blond and think that that is what guys want yet most guys I know are not into blondes and if you look at porn the average pornstars are brunettes. I think its because women with curly hair who do nothing with it do not generally look as good, the women you posted looked really good but lets be honest they also worked on their hair it may have been naturally curly but they had to do something with it while naturally straight hair doesn't require the same level of maintenance. I think that combined with womens perception of curly hair is what drives this idea not men themselves. I do know that black women in particular seem to hate their hair (wigs weaves extentiones etc) in fact my friends girlfriend is black (so naturally curly hair) and she hates it but he actually preffers her to wear her hair natural (I personally love curly hair when well maintained (like the women in the photos). Perhaps it has to do with an envy or perception of inferiority that is that white is beautiful and black is not, though personally I think the biggest issue with black women is that they try to fight their natural genetics (ie wishing they had straight hair and trying to force their hair to do what its not really designed to do intsead of actively playing to their hairs strength, skin lightening etc.). I think its kind of like confidence (in that if your not confident if you think your ugly people see you as that because clearly who knows you better then you?), that if you do not appreciate your traits and characteristics (like curly hair) then others just kind of go along with your pereception of it as well. Once women (specificly black women) embrace their looks and appreciate their traits instead of trying to mask them they enhance them (again like the women in the photos) then I think you will see a reversal of opinion.
Curly hair is not considered bad hair, it's just that straight hair seems more appealing. Straight hair is thinner and you can use a hair tie without it breaking. Straight hair is also more convenient. If you wet straight hair, it stays straight and you can just style it again. With curly hair, if you wet it, it takes a while for you to be able to do it again because more often than not it tangles up and then you spend hours combing it out. And with curly hair, you have to use TONS of product if you even want it to be half way decent. I'm not saying that for EVERY girl with curly hair, but for most people that's how it is. Then hair ties NEVER work for curly hair and you have your hair all nice and in a ponytail and you 1) are on the last loop and as soon as you wrap it, the tie breaks forcing you to get a new one, when oh no you don't have one. 2) You successfully get your hair up, but as your day goes on you reach up and find that your hair is no longer in its containments because your hair tie broke and fell out. Another thing with curly hair, is that everybody thinks they can touch it! You get your hair all nice and done and then people come up to you and touch your hair talking about it and sometimes its a compliment but on the inside you're just screaming, "do you know how long it took me to get it like this?" By the time they finish touching your hair, all the product is on their hands and no longer in your hair leaving you a poofy mess.
Don't get me wrong, I love having curly hair, but sometimes its such an inconvenience and straight hair is just so much more easy to handle.
Both types of hair have their pros and cons, but curly hair just has more cons.
On just about any GaG poll, the guys are the ones who are always 50/50 that curly hair is bad or straight hair is best. (not all, but it's split) We girls are a little better on actually seeing the beauty in curly hair.
As a curly haired lady, I appreciate that. But it's totally unnecessary because I love my hair, and will even if no one else does. As a biracial person, I'm angered and let down when people in the black community treat hair better when it is less kinky/coily, not necessarily straight in my experience (though weaves are usually straight) but too many people within the black community covet curly hair over kinky/coily hair. But the natural movement is awesome and a lot of people are going natural and loving their hair, regardless of texture, curl pattern, and that's great :)
I don't think having straight hair means having "good hair". To me, any hair that is healthy and strong is good. Regardless of its texture. I think this way of describing hair is stupid. It shows that some black people still have a "slavery mentality" and it's really sad and revolting at the same time. Black people spent some many years hearing non black people saying they were ugly and that they hair was also ugly and disgusting. That now, they still believe that having curly hair is not good. The same goes to dark and light skinned black people.
I had people saying that I have "good hair" so many times. It makes me angry! I wonder when they are going to realize that our hair is not "bad".

As someone with curly hair who always straightens it I think it gets labelled "good hair" because straight hair is usually silky and smooth (it also looks longer) as curly hair is frizzy, tangles easy and looks shorter because of gravity. Notice how anyone with curly hair (when not straightened) looks shorter than when it is straight? Because it "sorta" is. Many people also love long hair. Silky long hair (to some) is super attractive and society has taken notice. How many guys and girls prefer long haired girls as opposed to shorter cuts? I have even seen questions like that on this site and a lot from what I saw at the time prefered a woman with long hair.
Well both of those bottom two women have damaged kinky and curly-kinky hair respectively. There's lots of types of curly hair, but that hair type is usually considered kinky. Anyways, straight hair is a lot easier to manage and take care of, so it usually looks more clean and well kept even if it's not. Curly or kinky hair can turn into a giant frizzball of a lion mane in 2 seconds so that's part of it. I think people are starting to appreciate different hair types more now
I think people assume straight hair is the better hair because its easy maintenance and even with the low maintenance it looks nice? I don't know. I think curly hair all hair really is beautiful.
It depends. To me both can look great or bad. I have curly hair and some days it looks good, some days it doesn't. The same applies to straight hair, sometimes it lacks volume, is greasy, frizzy or not that straight, yet not curly.
Good hair in the black community isn't straight. Good hair is manageable hair. All sorts of curly. All three of those black women have "good hair". Stop with the stupid questions about blacks.
Healthy hair to me is good hair but i prefer to straighten my hair because i always have it big so therefore the newer the look the more of change it looks.
Well when I was growing up... all I wanted was curly hair. My daughter has curly hair and she straightens it. I tell her how beautiful her hair is the way it is.
Curly hair takes A LOT of time to make it look good. It's not like we just wake up and do nothing with our hair. Especially girls with curly hair, it may take them a long time to do their hair.
