Is this teacher being a little TOO friendly or is it just my imagination?

He asked me to come in after school (I do that almost everyday) so he can help me with my homework and stuff but we just end up talking for like 2 or 3 hours...(we talk about me, my family, background, etc...) Then when we are done we walk together to our cars.

We laugh a lot when we are together..it seems like he's flirting sometimes but I can't tell I'm not good at that. He always makes me laugh though.

Other things I've noticed: stares in my eyes a lot, sits very close to me, friendly touches on arm and shoulder stuff like that.

When I was studying to be a teacher, they taught us never to be alone with a student (liablility reasons), never touch a student (i.e. hug, hand shake) and always set a positive example- among other things. It's too risky for behaviors to be misconstrued like in this case. I think this teacher obviously has a fondness for you, especially if you are a strong performer in school. However, it sounds too cozy to me and highly creepy. If you are there to do homework then that is all the time should be utilized for. I think you need to be leery and create some space between you and this teacher. Stop staying after school and only do it IF you really have to. If he asks why you have stopped staying after school, tell him that you have a new schedule now and have new commitments. Leave it at that.

Why is it creepy for two adults of the opposite gender to talk and laugh?

A teacher, professor, PhD etc. represent the faculty of a school and therefore have an image as a professional to portray at all times. I think this guy is out of line and he needs to be less personal with this student. It's one thing to have a positive rapport with your students and engage in adult convos. It's another story when the teacher is overly friendly and flirty because I think it crosses that professional line.

Are you in high school or college? I think greeneyedgal1 thinks you are in high school...and if you are this is completely inappropriate. I don't care if you are 18, if he is a college graduate and you have yet to have the college experience it IS creepy! If you are in college it may be ok but you still need to be weary, he is your teacher and he should treat you in this way! We can't help the way we meet our future mates but they should not take advantage of their positions when they are authority figures either. So be sure he is NOT doing that...he could have a reputation for being like this!
