Why do many goths wear crosses, often elaborate crosses? What do they symbolize? Is it religious?

I know being goth you can belong to any religion, but what I'm saying is that many goths I've seen wear necklaces with rather large and elegant crosses (not inverted) or have it as a design on their clothing. I've even gone to tattoo parlors and they have titles of "gothic cross," and I'm wondering what they represent, and if they are linked to being catholic.
