Guys: Why would you call a girl "Darling"?

Just wondering because my male friend calls me "Darling" but calls his girlfriend "Babes". The context was "I love you Darling". Just wondering what's the difference only I think I've seen him flirting with me a little more than just a friend would too.Just wondering... What's the difference between the name "Babes" and "Darling" from a guy's point of view : )

Personally I would never call anybody anything like that regardless of whatever relationship status I have them. As to your question-the former would, in my mind indicate something of a more playful nature while the other may be indicative of something which has more emotional connotations. Mind you, seeing as I am not to dispense with these take my opinion with the requisite pinch or handful of salt.

I think that "darling" is a term of endearment, and I wouldn't worry about how he feels about you, as you said- he has a girlfriend with her own moniker.
