Is the black and white “SS” symbol always a white supremacist symbol? Or could it be something else?

Is the sign of the Waffen-SS, The Schutzstaffel or the Nazi parties "private army" depending on how you want to call them.
Its originally based on a runic alphabet that some crazy Austrian invented in the beginning of 1900 and is the sign for the letter "S". Nazis and white supremacists are known for taking Germanic and Scandinavian runes as symbols for their cause for a long time now even though the SS one is a bit of a fraud since its so "recent".
Other examples of nazi symbolism is for example this:

Which symbolizes their "Blood and soil" doctrine and is the basis for their belief that they have ancestral claims to historical Germanic lands. The rune itself is Nordic in origin and represents "heritage; inheritance, inherited estate"
There is currently a drive to "reclaim" the Nordic runes from the Nazis as symbols of Nordic heritage and not connected to the Nazis.
What are the odds that someone I know displaying it is in a neo nazi group, do you think? 😕
Sorry to hear that, too. :(
There might exist similarities but the "classical" slanted SS-symbol stands for "Schutzstaffel", which is the German word for "protection corps" and refers to Adolf Hitlers private army (which also functioned as bodyguard troop). The SS is responsible for some of the most horrific war crimes and crimes against humanities, including the day-to-day execution of the holocaust (final solution) as well as the actions that led up to it, such as the Kristallnacht in 1938.
In other words: it always refers to Nazism because that is where it was created (contrary to the swastika, for instance, which existed long before the Nazis).
It's *only* a nazi thing.
F**k Nazis. I hate these hateful, tweaking creeps.

Well the slanted S symbols are originally Norse runes, so they could be on tons of things not Nazi related. But people generally avoid it because it's seen as a Nazi thing
I saw someone using it on FB and I was surprised. I hate neo Nazis. They are trash. Too many poor dirtbags are buying into this crap.
Doesn't mean they're a Nazi, could be something else. Most of Asia has swastikas everywhere because it was originally a Buddhist symbol
I’m in poor white trash America...
The SS in the motorcycle lifestyle comes from the fact that in the 60s motorcyclists often would wear German World War II helmets on their heads. It's the same SS that the Nazis had.
Would you think someone displaying it is a neo nazi / white supremacist (Aryan Nation, etc).
Didn't the rock band "KISS" have the slanted SS? A band fronted by "Gene Simmons", whose birth name is Gene Chaim Witz Klein, originally born in Israel?
So, it depends upon context.
Yeah, the KISS s does resemble the Nazi, SS, now that you mention it.
And yet, they don't come looking more Jewish than Gene Simmons.
Make it mean what ever ypu want yes SS was the nazi soldiers hell make SS mean shutup stupid lol.
It is really a shame Nazis co-opted so many cool symbols.
Not always. It can be a military term for Scout Sniper. If it is formed in two lighting bolts however, you can be safe its National Socialist symbolism.
Most motorcycle clubs were started by ww2 airplane pilots who liked the freedom it brought so I doubt it
Sadly, nazi bikers aren’t uncommon in my area. They sell meth, too, a lot of times.
Ss is not a white supremacy thing it was a nazi military unit
I’m modern day America, I mean.
The SS symbol is two s lightening bolts
Can be something else
No idea. Don't care.
