Blunt truth, many who put it in everyone's face often aren't even actual southerners. I knew somebody who was Texan and for real, all the way up to being descended from confederate soldiers. I remember her as actually quite humble and open minded. Not one to wave that flag around.
Look into backgrounds of people who wave that flag like a maniac or go as far as wearing it as a dress in 2013.
1. Do they ACTUALLY have any real confederate heritage? Likely no, as that's quite rare.
2. Many who obsess over this kind of thing up the line likely just come from Europe like most or anywhere besides the former Confederate area. Facts.
3. Many do so only for attention or just to be anti PC without actually caring for real confederate or southern heritage. I'd compare them to weebs. Or drama queens. Not much besides that.
4. If you walk into a small town, let's say in the middle of Mississippi, go into a bar/diner and see a confederate flag on the wall, but not much confederate stuff besides it, (maybe a bit of a rustic southern theme here and there) then, perhaps there's legitimacy to actual relation to it, but I can nearly guarantee most at the bar/diner barely even think much of it more than general decor, not much else and are too busy with their life to give it much thought.
5. The issue is the people who obsess with it. Both sides. On one hand, to many degrees, it's a flag of betrayal to America, kind of like putting up a North Korean flag, so flack for it may be expected in modern times. If you can't understand that, well, it's on you if a brick gets thrown through the diner window, as same would hold true for a diner with a North Korean flag.
On the other hand, I am not advocating to go out and attack those with those kinds of flags, as freedom of expression must be held for all, even if we don't agree. The minute it's not available for one, it's ALL in danger. In addition, many argue the confederates came into being because of high taxes. I'm not a historical expert, so I'm not going to get into that, but instead say I am unsure. Fact of the matter is a large amount of people see the flag as representing slavery and/or betrayal to America, so anyone who likes the flag has to be ready for it, just like with the Nazi or North Korean flag.
In conclusion, this. If one really is interested in the history of confederates and such, that's fine, and usually it'll show in that there is little to no obsession, but instead fascination. If one LITERALLY has the flag EVERYWHERE and is basically a weeb, but for it, then I understand retaliation. But I would say the proper way to retaliate to it is more subtle such as wearing a dress to the same prom, but with a union jack or American flag. Maybe even send that sorta person a holiday greetings card with a picture of Ulsseys S. Grant on it so that way they can't be as mad, since it'd obviously for the lulz and very subtle. If they do get mad, that's their problem, as it's a greeting card in the end, what could they say?
If somebody posts like crazy about the right for the flag and goes nutso online for it, troll em. Put in a photoshopped pic of a the Confederate and Chinese flag together with the caption, "south shall rise again." Whoever spreads that, you'll know is a fake. And you can call them out and start some nice epic chaos. :D Clever tricks like that often work when executed right. If you want people to rethink the whole confederate flag thing or really any issue, trolling is the key. :D

What she's wearing in that photo isn't even the Confederate flag. The flag looked like these over the course of the US Civil War:

Good, bad or otherwise the fact is that this flag is and will always be a part of American history as are the statues of confederate generals etc and the thinking that removing them from sight is also WRONG! IT IS HISTORY AND NOTHING CAN EVER CHANGE THAT. Would be better to leave these thing to show how a country can grow and mature.
Looks more like X marks the spot.

They can make up any nonsensical history they wish.

That isn't my concern.
But they won't control my reaction to it.I think the backwards southerners do consider it that way, yeah. But others prefer to take pride in the peaches, cooking, countryside, hospitality, Civil Rights history, and landmarks.
Nothing wrong with a flag. It doesn't shoot people. It is Northern Liberals making it mean something it doesn't . Hysterical liberals. It was the flag of Democrats , but I don't have a problem with it.
Nope. It's the losers flag.
Wearing it "with pride" is kind of a red flag to being trash, and a red neck.
You cannot "celebrate" a loss, unless you're a loser. It can be, but it shouldn't be.
And Lincoln was Republican. Democrats were for slavery.
History is complicatedI think it's just a little bit of pride it has no value to any one out side the us other that a war and the south lost the sooner they take the loss and get on with helping the USA being great again the better to us outside,
No its just racists who still can’t reconcile with the fact that THEY LOST.
I just find it comical that self proclaimed “patriots” claim that a flag that represents treason against the country that they say they love is their “heritage”
no, it's a flag meant to celebrate bigotry by traitors.
Yes it is. And don’t use the whole Swastika argument. Because no other flag exists to represent the American South, which is a culturally unique and distinct region.
texas was not part of the 13 colonies so you shouldn't feel any affiliation
You guys threw propaganda around for centuries on how it was all about southern pride, don't bitch when you ex-electors buy it.
It should only be regarded as a part of our history but not actually represent us because it makes no sense to as the confederate states are done.
For some people yea it can but that depends on where in the south
It is. And leave that girl alone. She has a right to wear whatever dress she wants.
I’m not a Southerner, but it certainly sounds like it to me.
