There's several factors that may explain why:
1. They don't know about anything different and that's what they're used to have. In a poor village many of their neighbors may be in the same situation as themselves, so therefor their conception of poverty and unfairness may be different than our conception. The education and experience they've may also affect how much they knows about living standards in other countries, their concept etc. too.
2. When you've little you takes rarely something for granted and is appreciating it more. Therefor you can easier be happier.
3. They may be relative poor, but not actually poor. In their country they may be the middle class or even a bit rich, having their needs covered etc. But in the 1st world they would be considered poor, something they wouldn't in their country, because we've different standards and systems in the different countries.
4. With little resources it's more difficult to achieve things and you've to work harder, so it's easier to see what you've achieved than if it was too easy so you didn't notice it.
5. In 3rd world countries people are often born in poverty, while in 1st world country you may be poor later in life either because of just being unlucky or result of personal failure. So then you're not used to being poor.
6. The climate don't have to be always bad. Not everyone in 3rd world country is dying of thirst and hunger. Some may have little money, but is enjoying the sunny days while people in 1st world countries is traveling to tropical climates.
7. If you're poor, appearance pressure may not be as high and if you're rich it's expected more of you to spend time on it.
8. More of people in 3rd world countries are religious and nihilistic point of view isn't something for everyone. Religion have it's positive and negative thing with it. So it exist people who likes religion.
It's a lot of people in 3rd world countries who aren't happy and have it worse than people in 1st world countries. It can also go the other way. So it's also depending from person to person and their experiences too, not only where they're from.
That is just because you got a weird definition of "happiness" and reality.
First of all poor people in 3rd world countries and poor people in 1st world countries are poor for very different reasons. For example, poor people in 3rd world countries could be poor simply because of where they live of where they were born while being poor in a 1st world country is often the result of personal failure or unfortunate scenarios.
Even as a poor person in a 1st world country however you still have basic necessities to live such as clean water (most of the time) which means you are not really living a desperate live or die situation. If you were not motivated in a 3rd world country you would already be dead which is something to take into consideration as well.
What is also to consider is that being "Poor" is relative. People in Africa might only be poor compared to us in the 1st world country but in the context of their area they are just average and live average lives with average ambitions.
Lastly.. They do a lot of drugs and alcohol in 3rd world countries.. like a lot.
I was born and grew up in a 3rd world country for 22 years. I had better days than bad. Growing up, my childhood was a very happy and fulfilled one despite the fact I only had one doll with a broken face. I grew up with my cousins, we were left home alone unattended with our parents working but we protected each other and we played with whatever is available. We played tag in the rain, went swimming in the river and build playhouses from old boxes. We grew up with nothing but we were happy. We still talk about our childhood fondly when we get together as adults. Happiness is a choice. People from first world countries can be happy too.
I can so relate to this. lol
who says they're happy? ARE they? i would need to meet someone from a war torn country with horrible infrastructure to see if they are happier than me. i find that hard to beleive. i imagine day to day living is very stressful for them.
Because people in 3rd world countries are grateful for what little they do have. As opposed to being spoiled, overindulgent, greedy, and just always wanting more.

Because people’s idea of happiness is correlated with how much you have. It’s a very superficial way of defining happiness, that’s why people are shocked when they figure out a poor man is happier than a rich man. It goes against their definition of happiness.
Less sense of entitlement, I think.
First world countries have all the basics and most of the luxuries sorted, so they seek fulfillment in other things. Third world countries are very much, if you don't buck up your ideas you will die and nobody will give a shit.
It's why i think it's hilarious seeing people in the first world whinge about equality, money, etc. Or their silly little lives in general. Because in the grand scheme of things, if you were born in the first world you have a better life than about 80% of the planet.
So people in the comments are saying we don't have shit... let's see:
Education_Free
Water_ US $11.00/mth (drinkable)
Electricity_ US $9.00/mth
Gas_ US $0.54 - $0.62 /liter
People here are very laid-back and not easily butthurt so we tend to be far happier than people in first word countries.😊 Further more we have every luxury/service as first word countries. The difference is, we live our lives here to the fullest here ❤😊
Not to mention you celebrate 70 times a year!! :P :)
When we made the world cup.. we got a National Holiday lol
They have less "needs" in their own eyes, to be comfortable they require way less than that of which a person from a richer country needs because they are not used to the luxuries which we have.
Put a man who has been on the streets his entire life in a mansion for a month and he'll never comfortably go back to living on the streets.
I doubt the data you have is accurate. I mean just look at the Syrian refugees. They jumped on a boat to drown and die at the sea for a chance to work.
Then look a Sudan. Men killing each other for a couple cows. Then they hope to trade the cows for a wife. Or they just use their guns to rape and pillage. People slaughtered entire villages for a piece of dirt to farm.
Happy? Where did you get that?
It has been shown that people with too much freedom and options in life tends to feel emptiness and boredom that will lead to depression.
While in the third world nations, are busy working on how to provide the basic needs for them and their children !
That's why the suicide rates often happened to people who live in a good place/environment ( middle class to rich one ). while the people of South Africa just DON'T GIVE A FUCK ! lol
lower standards, disgustingweebtrash nailed it.
plus happiness is so abstract its tricky to accurately quantify so I personally wouldn't put much stock in those studies, sounds like pseudo-science
furthermore I'm Australian born and raised, the 2nd most developed country on the planet & im supposed to believe some bloke in Sudan or Somalia is happier and more content than me?
give me a break, not say there isn't a modicum of truth/insight into your premise but wouldn't say its applicable for the most part
Happiness is a relative term. A poor person can have "nothing" but have everything they want and be happy. A rich person can have "everything" and nothing they want. It's a matter of perspective. Read "A Christmas Carol". The lesson is there.
They are happy with what they have , yes i agree it's amazing
how happy they seem than you got ones in America want to
take their self out and are depressed it does make you wonder
i think people who have everything are just never happy.
When you have very little you appreciate simple things a lot more.
They are not worried about looking good. They're grateful for everything they have. Everything we do but opposite.
I would imagine it’s because they’re grateful for what they have and take nothing for granted.
Materialism settles in when freedom is at the top priority.
Because third worlders are not as corrupted by the taints of greed, materialism, and hedonism. Thus, they are more likely to dedicate themselves to meaningful and fulfilling pursuits.
You see all those people trying to leave and get here. It's not because they are happy there. You just don't see the soldiers pointing guns and saying 'laugh for the TV man"
Maybe because there's more stress to succeed in first world countries and we are less family oriented than the 3rd world.
I was born in a first world country to parents from the 3rd world. Happiness is what you make it. My parents taught me the value of having nothing, and to make do with what I have. those values are still with me.
Poverty is relative once your basic needs are met. Never seen a car... Then not having one won't bother you.
Hmmm. Maybe because they don’t take things for granted as much. They’re more appreciative
Uhhh statistically Iceland is the happiest country.
Our own standards of living, here in industrialized nations, you have to be a successful millionaire driving the best cars to his mansion to mean anything. In third world country they tend to have family values, and less is more with them.
Cause we have options and we take them for granted.
Because third world countries aren't spoiled rotten. They live on minimalist values, thus having no need for the Iphone X, the newest Nike sneakers, or constant rent payments.
Because they barely have anything... They can live a life where they have the opportunity to appreciate everything
First world countries are more vulnerable to decadence. If you have more commodities you can have more vices.
Because ironically, humans need a common suffering to be happy, overall.
Because they don't have to worry about shit and shit
I think people in 3rd world countries care more about family and community. People in 1st world countries tend to care more about possessions and status.
Simply because they don't have anything to care about it
Because they don’t have other wealthy kids to compare to unlike here
Who says they're happy?
Just from what i've read up on, they're happier than 1st world.
Shift your readings to more reliable sources.
Have a look online you'll see studies.
Happy to be alive today and not dying of hunger or discease
Cause playing with poop to them is like us test driving a Lamborghini I guess
they understand
Did you pull that out of your ass? I'm sure some 3rd world street shitter who can't even write in his own native language and has no concept of civilization is happier than me
Bcoz in poor countries even little things can make children happy
But in rich countries where people already have what want and need they dont feel so
even little things like unpoisoned water
Let's make them poorer: they'll be even happier.
I guess Alabama must by the happiest state in the US, this way )

They have nothing to lose, and the only way is up!
Cause they may not realize all the chaos and stress richer people endure.
(maybe?)
Because they have less money they tend to cherish whatever little they have.
differences in perspective
The simplicity of life
We have nothing to lose
Not tied down to the idea of material wealth
Mo money mo prollems
