A British student won a national prize for designing chairs forcing men to sit with their legs closed, and women to sit with their legs spread open. Laila Laurel, a 2019 graduate of the University of Brighton, won the Belmond Award, granted at the New Designers Event in London this week, for her work entitled, “A Solution for Man Spreading.” The men's chair has legs that narrow in width, forcing the sitter’s legs to press into each other, while the women’s chair does the opposite, forcing their legs to be spread widely. According to the New Designers website, the competition’s judges found Laurel’s work to be a “bold, purpose-driven design that explores the important role of design in informing space, a person’s behavior and societal issues of today.” Ms Laurel's prize includes a £1,000 bursary and the chance to design a product for a hotel and leisure company. Laurel said the "concept" chair was inspired by her experiences of men "infringing on my space in public". She also said, "I was also hugely inspired by Laura Bates’ Everyday Sexism Project where I read about the struggles and frustrations of women around the world pertaining to men infringing on their space. I think encouraging women to consider the way in which they move through the world or the space they take up in relation to men is powerful because it is such an intrinsic and huge issue, and yet one that perhaps is not always considered. I think men have a tendency to command space and require women to move for them far more than vice versa. In order to achieve gender equality it is imperative to consider... political gendered issues around seating." Since the award, she says: "I have received a lot of explicit messages from men who seem to be under the impression that I hate all men." The University of Brighton student said this "couldn't be further from the truth frankly". What do you reckon?
