It's quite a liberal tradition. I like the idea that they are allowed to go out and experience the non-Amish world, experiment and let their hair down, so to speak. At least they won't live their entire lives feeling like they were kept ignorant and held captive. The fact that, once they are considered adult, they get to choose for themselves, is pretty cool, even if there is a lot of pressure to get baptized and remain part of the community. It's a true rite of passage.
I think circumcision should be treated the same way. Men should be allowed to make their own decision at a certain age.

It's good they allow for the younger people to make that decision themselves. They give them the opportunity to experience things on their own so if they stay, its out of genuine belief in the a Amish lifestyle rather than feeling obligated and trapped to do so.

Too bad the kids aren't welcomed back if they decide not to return. Cut off their family completely.
