Girlfriend thinks I'm a wuss. How do I make her think otherwise?

Some guy was messaging me and writing stuff he heard about my girlfriend. I wanted to avoid any issues, so I just said stuff like forget it, leave it be, etc.. It was about my gf's reputation and stuff. Most of which I know wasn't true. However, to my surprise the guy emailed the entire chat to her. Since then my girlfriend has been distant and kinda cold. I'm worried its basically over. I also feel like a bit of a wuss for not saying something different. Can anyone give me ideas about how I can fix this situation. Damage seems to be done. And I feel like crap right now. Thanks.

bbm chat. I messed up man. I should have told him to f off. I was just not in the mood for an altercation. how do I repair / fix this situation so she doesn't see me as a wuss in her eyes?

man, its not the same. I can tell. she's not the same at all. I have a bad feeling about break up coming soon.
