Alright lets just trash the conspiracy theories right here and right now. No country has anything to gain from a pandemic that trashes their economy and society and this is hitting all over the world. If you want to believe that every nation on earth somehow agrees to blow this out of proportions then I doubt this conversation will go any further.

So you want a reason why shit is hitting the fan? This pandemic has an estimate that 70% of the world's population could be infected which equals around 5,4 billion people. Of those lets say 1% would die. That would be 54 million people pushing up daises. Beyond that there has been reports that people who recovered from infection did not develop immunity to the virus which means you risk re-infection of the same virus. Needless to say that is bad. There is also records that seams to indicate that there are new strains of the virus which means there could be more waves of infections incoming.

Right now the virus spreads much faster than the flu and has a mortality rate at least 10 times higher. There is also a very real possibility that it will become another seasonal disease which means its going to come back every year or so, infect more people than the flu and kill far more. This is in addition to what the flu is already doing mind you.

But perhaps you dont care about any of this even though its going to trash the world economy and send it back into a worse recession than black Monday. After all it only impacts those with compromised immune systems and old people right? Well so do most people think but the world is not so kind. Millions of healthy young people are going to die without any real reason why they would fall so ill and you might be one of them.

Even if you are not hospitals will still be busy handling the hundreds of millions of cases that require medical attention even if they might not be life threatening. In other words if you get sick with something else or injured there is no telling if they have the time or resources to spend on you anyway since everything is going towards fighting the pandemic.

There is also the question of your friends and families. Perhaps you are lucky and are not really effected but if you know just a handful of people chances are getting pretty high that at least one of them might die and if you have elderly relatives or friends they are fairly likely to die as well.

This is just scratching the surface though. I can go on and on and on about how fuckt we are right now.

Reports are coming in left in right that hospitals are cutting hours and laying off medical personnel. So your third to last paragraph seems to indicate to me there is plenty of time and resources.

@bangyourhead That sounds to me that they are running out of resources and has to prioritize, choosing to sacrifice some for the sake of others. Not to mention the amount of staff that gets infected and can't work or staff that specializes in other fields and can't help the actual pandemic.

@Soteris. That is not the situation. There is no indication we are running out of resources. This is hospital staff being furloughed. A nurse should be able to do nurse things regardless of her specialty. Sure a gynecologist might not be able to assist, but they all have a basic understanding of first aid and medical care. Bed utilization continues to be low in the US.

Right now any hospital with half a brain-cell is trying to clear out as much of their capacity as possible because if models hold they are going to need every one of them.

They currently need around 15 000 more ventilators, 8000 ICU beds and 13000 normal beds. These are technically shared resources which means other areas that would have needed these same resources will probably not get them.

Also there is every indication that they are running out of resources especially PPE such as masks. I mean the Trump administration even went out to bitch at them for "using too much" as if that makes sense.

They couldn’t even perform an experiment to inform people the best materials to make homemade masks from. To your comment on under capacity, well if you have less workers it’s easier for them to claim how overwhelming it could be, also the COVID claims, the more help from federal funding. I visited several hospitals over the last year and much of what I seen and was told proved opposite of which the news did.

I leave you with this, for the last 20 years CVD has been the leading cause of death through the World, numero uno. Approx 18 million deaths a year, where’s anyone concern about that, where the media there, why aren’t FF restaurants being forced to closed….

1: My example was theoretical and meant to highlight that even a very small lethality will still have a major real world impact. This was to counter any notion that "Covid is no big deal because only like 1% or less dies from it". A one percent lethality can still wreck humanity around the world.

2: If anything I have been vindicated because currently Covid19 is the 9th most deadly pandemic in human history. Its bad juju. Also worth noting is that its not over yet so even with vaccine and experience in how to treat patients we are still looking at potentially a full year or more before we have the final numbers.

3: As for making homemade masks? Dont even bother, at least not in a vain attempt to "protect" yourself from covid19. There is no material suitable for making homemade masks and there is no way to construct it to a standard high enough. People have literally died trying to make homemade masks in the pursuit of the quite literally insane problem of building a "filter" for something that is much smaller than you can possibly have a mesh for. Just get a readily available mask made by professionals instead.

4: As for finding out the real numbers? Its not actually that hard, you just need to do a little work on collecting the numbers and doing some math. A good example is "excess mortality" which completely sidesteps the whole issue of having to diagnose the cause of death entirely. It simply just asks "How many people have died under this period compared to how many people would have died under normal circumstances?" This accounts for all sources of death associated with a crisis from people becoming depressed and taking suicide to patients dying from covid19. Its a fairly elegant way of getting a crude but total number of fatalities effected by covid19.

Yes, those numbers of people die of those causes every day (I assume your figures are correct), but that's the whole point, it's every day; roughly the same numbers every day.

The pandemic will kill approximately twice as many people today as it did two weeks ago. Not long ago, before social distancing and stay-at-home became the norm, it was doubling every few days.

At the moment, it's 5-6,000 deaths per day. Double that four times, and the death rate is 80-96,000 deaths per day. The time it takes to double four times, if we're sensible, is at least two months (hopefully much longer, maybe even never), or we could go back to "normal", and be there in a couple of weeks.

Do that a couple more times, and we're at millions of deaths a day, until it runs out of people to infect.

The reason why the numbers are only terrible and not catastrophic would be because we did things to slow the spread.

People are dying. That's why you should be worried. Moreover, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and starvation aren't contagious and can't kill you in under a week after you start showing symptoms. Of course those things are all awful. But they are either rarely experienced by people who have the resources to prevent it, or doctors already have the equipment to do what they can. The problem with coronavirus is that it spreads fast. It spreads too fast for hospitals to keep up and doctors are now needing to choose who get ventilators, because there aren't enough to go around. They are being forced to choose who lives and who dies because some people are too caught up in their own ego to realize that even if they will probably survive, there are people who won't. Personally, I couldn't live with myself if I gave it to someone, and they died.

Yes, exposure helps build immunity, but that would mean that you would need to catch this. Many people who catch this will not survive. Hospitals are being flooded with more cases than they can handle. That's why they're saying to flatten the curve. No, staying at home won't end this any sooner. But it will slow down the influx of patients enough that people who catch it are at least given a fighting chance. Doctors are working on a vaccine, and it's coming soon. If we can just do what we can to avoid contact until it comes out, countless lives will be saved. Scientists believe that if this were allowed to spread like it normally would, 70 percent of the world population would get it. About 6 percent of those people would not survive, and that's a fairly low estimate if you take into account the shortage of supplies. That's about 4.2 percent of the global population, which by my calculations equals about 374.4 million people who would die because some people don't want to wear a mask.

I know several people who have died from the coronavirus. Seeing people try to pretend that nothing serious is going on... it's getting really old.

I forgot to mention that there are serious longterm effects even on the people who do survive. We don't know all of them yet, but doctors have found that coronavirus survivors have 20 percent decreased lung capacity compared to before they contracted the virus. They believe that it is probably permanent. As someone who already has stunted lung capacity due to years of scoliosis bracing, allow me to tell you that it's not fun. So if the chance of killing other people isn't enough to get you to stay home, maybe this will. If you contract coronavirus, even if you survive, it won't be without serious health consequences.

Well lets see, the virus is contagious and a lot more worse than the flu. there's no vaccine and it can kill you because its so effective and unknown to the body. Plenty of things, it's a lot more contagious, and it has an extreme effect on the the elderly or people with weak immune systems. Once those people get it there's a very high chance they will die. And quickly die.

And if not die they hospitals will overflow with people and they won't be able to cope which means people who dont have it but are in hospital for something else will end up bot being cared for and many of those people will die.

Look how bad it is in Italy and Spain now. In Spain they dont look after anyone over 80 now.
For young people it might not be a huge deal but overall for society it is. And remember it's a virus. Which means it will stay in your body and because we dont know much about it, who's to say it won't attack our body again kater on in life?
