I was not expecting an existential question on this site of all places. You mention that phenomenally, from my point of view, they'd be the same, but this leaves the most question: did their consciousness transfer over to the clone, or did it expire? If it transferred over, then it is the same person, just not of the same matter. If it's not the same consciousness, then I don't consider it the same person, therefore it'd be an existential nightmare every time I look at them.

Then again, given our limited understanding of consciousness, I guess there'd be no way of knowing. This is a real headscratcher.

If the original and closer were indistinguishable, I imagine I would have the same feelings for the clone.

I don't think so - I believe their experience , their personality , their soul if you will is not matter - It can be replicated but would probably have to go through the same experience for the amount of time till you knew them - What would be interesting to me , would be say a child who died very young , a couple of days old and the parents were offered this option , would they take it?, would they treat the child as same entity or another entity entirely - I don't know I feel we are going down a road that may upset some so I will leave it there

Physically and Atomically sure they would be the same, but the personality, and all the unique things that made the peryou fell in love with just isn't there. I was married to the most beautiful person it all the things she was to me that made her beauty. The way she smiled, the way she laughed, the way she would snuggle close when we watched tv. H ow she would know what i needed or wanted without speaking a word. These and a 1,000 other things made her what she was. When she died my entire world was shattered & empty. I cried for a month almost solid & I still cry for her today. In my opinion I don't care how perfect the clone is, you"ll never be able to replace the original.

Well, you would have to still love them, they are everything you loved about the other person. However I don't think they would be the same person because none of us are the same person we were before. We change as time goes on so I don't see how this would be different. Though from a practical standpoint you would not be able to distinquish them from the original so it might be a moot point from a practical point of view.

Too many variables are missing. Would cloning restore memories? Is consciousness real? Is a person a being who experiences memories, emotions, feelings, desires, etc. ..

Or is a person actually those memories, experiences, and emotions and that's all?

Assuming they regain all their memories yes, the concept of cloning stems from their original DNA being rapidly reproduced so literally speaking they are the same person. Every cell in your body is eventually replaced. You don't have the same cells you once did as a child so technically, were all clones of ourselves

It's a case of they can be the same person but only if they go through everything the original did environmentally. A person who experiences things differently despite being the same person will turn out differently. A person who experiences trauma and someone who doesn't will be two different people.

People hold together at far worse, this just seems like a minor inconvenience. Infact I think people would pay (large/decent sums) money to have this ability.

Not sure. I guess memories are what really matter. The order things happen in a life creates the personalities of people. Also I heard we shed so much skin and our organs regenerate so much we’re basically different people every few years.
