Is “Cancel Culture” today’s equivalent of book burning?

Cancel culture doesn’t exist in the form that most people believe it to exist in, a lot of people believe that cancel culture exists and say it lasts forever and ruins peoples careers. I believe this is true but it only extends for a certain period or moment of time before people just stop caring about the issue.

An example I’ll give of this is Ellen degenerse, I’m not sure if I spelt her name right but I don’t care if i didn’t spell her name right because she’s a horrible person.
She treats her employees like absolute shit and has an extremely big ego. I’m not gonna go into much detail since this is old news so if you’re interested feel free to do some research yourself, plenty of resources are on YouTube. She was outed for a while and her apology wasn’t well received however she still has her show and everything.
Canceling is something that happens for a period of time, but the most important thing I believe can be taken out of cancel culture is for example in the old days the majority of canceling was done by the rich and powerful so the middle class and lower class had virtually no say, if the rich said you where a witch you’re getting burned to steak no matter what. They didn’t have the power to overthrow the rich but with cancel culture now a days it’s evolved into a thing where now anybody can be canceled. The rich and influential now aren’t protected from being canceled and can now therefore be held accountable for their actions.

It’s not a short term thing when you can’t find a job because a quick google search shows all the hateful messages that were posted about you at the time. Then it becomes very current for the reader and no job for you. Ellen will walk into a restaurant in 20 years and people in the restaurant will start to whisper about what she did. She is cancelled for life but we will talk about other things in the meantime. No one will watch her future shows. But she was one to cancel others so is the shoe fits wear it.
The rich didn’t kill the witches. Actually it was other young girls in Salem spreading rumors about women. It actually is the same thing as today’s cancel culture.

I disagree. If you can't get hired by an employer because they are influenced by a Google search and found "hateful messages", you probably don't want to work for them in the first place. There are still libel and defamation laws in place too.

It really all depends on the intent from both sides. There are people who publish things to change society in demonic ways. Then you have people who are trying to protect their children from it. Then you have things tossed on your child in school '"Catcher and the Rye", but don't want you to teach anything of God in school, or not allowed to have in school. Your forced either way. Cancel Culture from what I am gathering is trying to use "morals" to cancel out something that may have shouldn't have been done from the BEGINNING. NOW that it has escalated all of a sudden it's not acceptable. Porn is everywhere on social media, you can't do anything about it. But they want to "cancel" Dr. Suess's books? This is crazy. I don't even agree with everything. But I mean, really? I don't even want to know what is next.

The church is not the building. The church is the people. That's why they killing out people not Church buildings. Without having the foundation of God Church, those children don't have any place to go to. Churches don't like you, the schools don't like you, then why you are left isolated and by yourself. You cannot see my child because I have different belief in you. And you should not sing the parents for having a decision of wanting to have their children grow up in a place of a solid foundation and you don't even have it in your own home.

Again, we will see this stuff go on every single day regardless. And first of all saying how is no longer recommended for children isn't going to help those children. They still going to be seeing and witnessing these things every single day. When I read similar books like that I didn't see it as that. My innocent mind at the time did not look at it like that. To tell you the truth most children would not even be affected by looking at that. They will only be so if they are around things that's really pointed out in a manner that a child can easily absorb, and it doesn't help with the parents add on to that mess either. I have not seen any of that stuff regarding to any so-called black person, let alone Asian or Arabic people. If people would stop be teaching the kids a black and white person, a lot of people would not be having this issue because at the end of the day there's no such thing as race. We as human beings are One race in general. You start teaching your kids all the stuff that don't even matter you can't teaching the difference and they will grow up in the same so cool world that have racism in it to begin with the courage of feeding into it. Unless a child ask you certain questions then you address it. You do not have to hide all this other stuff unless for obvious reasons. If it's hyper sexualized and there are things that is inappropriate if that's the case you need to get rid of Disney you also because it shows all that also. You going to need to get rid of a lot of cartoons, a lot of video games, a lot of other stuff also if you want to do stuff like that. There is no point if you're not even going to teach your kids right from wrong. I was told to stay away from a lot of things growing up for a good reason. As an adult I never got to make my own decisions if I'm going to expose myself to those things or not. You cannot go around doing all that stuff have it published as I said before and then all of a sudden you don't want it around. - +1 y

As your claim of growing in the 90s give your personal experience validity, do know i too grew up in the 90s and based on the age on your profile i have better memory of the 90s as i was 5 in 1990 and you were possibly born in 1990 or 91. By your standard 90s experience make my experience more valid than yours.
Next defining a church as a community instead of a physical building doesn't invalidate my point. For my argument Church and schools are a settings. Weather they a setting composed of a physical building or a community of people their function in society remains the same. School (k-12) function it to educate children on the topics reading writing math science and social studies. The only time religions should be cover is in regard to they roll in history. Religious ideology is something to be learned about in church.
If you want learning about Christian ideology in school how you feel if they had to also learn about Jewish ideology or Muslim, or buddhism, or Taoism or any of the other number of religions that are practiced. - +1 y

God does not always need to be mentioned in order for you to feel and know his presence. You can literally see his presence and the Book of Esther. Most Jewish bible scholars don’t take all bible stories literally. Megilat Esther is one that is difficult to prove the historicity of.

They were canceled. The Romans canceled most of whom they conquered. The Christians canceled the Romans. The Muslims canceled the Christians. The Christians canceled the Muslims. I see nothing different here. Those who are doing the canceling today will have their ideas and culture canceled in 60 years. Enough lecturing for today. I'm off to get a beer! How much of that is governed by "free speech", and what "kind" of free speech are we talking about? We haven't answered those questions fully yet, and even when we do, it won't satisfy everyone.
"Cancel culture" is a catch-all phrase for too many different things. And why all the fuss now? I agree it's gone overboard in some areas, and it seems like a waste of time. It's yet another knee jerk reaction to try and satisfy every single person's viewpoint. If you were to watch some of the commercials from the 1950's you'd be saying "holy fuck", as well as some of the TV shows.

The Democrats have thrown in with totalitarianism. One by one they are trying to take away our rights. First burn our books, then take our guns, then put us in concentration camps.
11 Reply I can see the analogy, but I wouldn't exactly call cancel culture an equivalent of purging anything and everything that is even remotely opposed to some ideology - e. g the book burning by the nazis. The most that cancel culture achieves is labelling, but try as they might, there is no purging. We are not collectively any closer to accepting the ideas forced on us. Cancel culture creates turmoil, (as if there wasn't any, but I digress..) a group of individuals might be targeted because of X, Y, Z, but that's the extent of it.

Book Burnings are typically organized by a governing bodys to control the populous. A cancel mod can be formed by any one very often by people that no status to loss.
Book burning would target books and ideas and some level authors. Canceling targets people and will use anything to justify the canceling.

I think I interpret it differently because I grew up reading Dr. Seuss. They removed the few older books that were racist or whatever, understandable, no big deal. But most of his books taught about acceptance and a change of heart, and loving one another. Like the Grinch, for example. Not sure if that makes sense. Maybe Dr. Seuss was racist at some point and grew out of it over time. Then again, he also cheated on his wife that was dying of cancer 🥴

Why is it my concern as the consumer if lives, jobs or companies are destroyed? The whole point of capitalism is that the company is supposed to appeal to ME in both service and product. If they employ people I do not agree with they have failed to appeal to me and I am in my full right to refuse their product or service.

Cheers. Well, if I try to cover that one, I see it rooted in a form of "applied postmodernism". It's a dangerous philosophy as I see it because it views everything in the context of power hierarchies, even the very language we use. It's not just a matter of hyper-sensitivity that "woke" people want to ban Dr. Seuss books, or constantly reform the dictionary, or cancel all sorts of people, or anything of this nature. They are seeing everything through the context of power in maintaining a status quo of what they might call a "toxically-male-dominated, white-normative, heteronormative, cisnormative patriarchy". It's anti-liberal and anti-modernist/Enlightenment in nature and, at least when it comes to the vanguards of this movement, much more sinister than a bunch of hyper-sensitive types wanting to ban everything.
It's worse because they're also destroying people's lives.
I think when they go after people their goal is to drive them to suicide.

The general had been specifically ordered not to intervene without authorisation; any other time, he said he would have had "immediate response authority to protect property, life, and in my case, federal functions – federal property and life. But in this instance I did not have that authority."
Why was he ordered not to intervene? Why did it take so long to get authorisation to the general? Why do Republicans want to talk about Dr. Seuss instead? Why do people like you try to pretend this was no big deal?

CNN's editorial group chooses stories that promote the need for gun control and they intentional block stories which show ordinary citizens protecting their families or neighbors from grievous harm by using a gun.
They do this all day long, every day

You would be in the small minority on this poll. I think a lot of people believe this and actually just saw this type of question today in an online newspaper. They are also going after Turner Broadcasting System for movies such as Gone With The Wind and many others. It is book burning in a way as surely as it was in the 1930s.
