Should we bring back crucifixion?

Crucifixion was once a popular method of punishment throughout the Roman empire but fell out of favour. It was both painful and humiliating for the criminal and served as a strong visual deterrent to onlookers who could see justice being done.

Perhaps it could be done on a short term basis and not to fatality. Say for example an hour for theft or four for armed robbery. This would free up prison space and the effect of the injuries would last for years after extending the punishment..

For minor crimes we could just tie them to the cross rather than nailing them.

What actually kills the victim?
The initial scourging would weaken the victim, cause massive blood loss, and probably induce shock. By the time the victim had carried thecross bar to the crucifixion area, he would be exhausted.

Once up on the cross, the victim would have his body weight suspended by their arms. In this position, it is difficult to completely exhale. The victim could take shallow breaths for a while, but eventually would be forced to push himself up to take a full breath.

At this point three things happen:

The victim's weight is now fully supported by his feet. The nails through the feet would be likely to hit two major nerves running through the area. The result would be excruciating pain in the legs.
The nails in the wrists would be likely to pierce the main nerve running through the arm. As the victim pushed up to breath, the wrists would rotate against the nail, irritating the nerves and causing intense pain in the arms. Some authorities also believe that the crucifixion position would dislocate the shoulder or elbow. Any movement would aggravate the pain from these injuries.
The wounds on the victims back from the scourging would push up against the rough part of the centerpiece. This would tend to re-open the wounds, leading to more pain and blood loss.
This combination of pain would quickly force the victim to lower himself back down. Eventually, the victim would no longer be able to raise himself up and would suffocate. The shock from blood loss due to the scourging would hasten this process.

In some cases, the victims legs were broken to finish him off. This would prevent the victim from being able to raise himself up and he would suffocate in a matter of minutes.

Crucifixion is too much. But lashing is a good option.
If i were a criminal like a thief or summ I'd take lashing over being imprisoned for like 10 years. It's actually more humane in my opinion. A few months lock down made me feel i lost 1 year of my youth. Imagine years spent behind bars where you can't attend the funeral, births, weddings of your loved ones.

But some dangerous individuals need to be seperated and isolated from society.

That would be total madness.
Crucifixion was one of the most heinous forms of execution.
It still thrills through religious and historical films.
I could not accept such a form by which man suffers in terrifying torments screaming in pain to his last breath.

How primitive, savage, ruthless, barbaric, bloodthirsty, to agree to torment a man in such a way, when God urges us to forgive.
How great should be the mad desire of a man for revenge on another man to nail him.
Regardless of the deed committed by a criminal / offender, I would not accept that he receive such a bloody capital punishment.
I do not want to be above the murderer through my revenge, nor do I want to be an animal that accepts such a thing.

Oh yes definitely.

The A1, the M1 etc, pick a motorway then just line the up the motorway.

we could reduce electronic signs, by making them hold ‘next junction is xxx’ signs.

For serious offenders they get nailed agreed.

the minor ones attend compulsory cross making class and after x number of crosses, carry one with them to the M4 say and are tied there.

also happy with stocks and pillories, pillories being handing at junctions in town, ask directions and they can no or point with fingers.

car thieves are the main offenders that need nailed on them, irony of watching all those cars.

Something about the contrast between the elegant beauty of the horse and a man's head being pummeled on cobblestone, makes being drawn and quartered my punishment of choice. Plus, with crucifixion, the buzzards get to pick the body apart. Why should they have all the fun?

Interesting idea. In the United States the constitution would need to be amended to allow for it. One problem though and that is people would make parallels to the most famous crucifixion and then those who die would be considered martyrs by at least some group.

No because it violates the 8th amendment which protects against excessive bail, excessive fines, or cruel and unusual punishment. Nailing someone's hands to a cross and leaving them there for days is something that any reasonable person would define as cruel and unusual punishment.

Now days, if there was a concerted media campaign to make crucifixion sound beneficial, similar to the masking and vaccine nonsense, people would line up and beg to be crucified, themselves. "Look how virtuous I am!" They would be angry with anyone who didn't want to be crucified and demand to have them forcibly crucified.

People rarely choose crime just because they can. Criminals often have a troubled past or lack skills and resources to live a decent life. Cruel punishment isn't going to help them, odds are they had a bunch growing up. We're better off normalizing counseling and making the minimum contribution (40hrs) to society allow people their basic needs: food shelter water medicine.
