According to a quick google: It was chosen on a whim in 1963 with the reasoning that the condition is puzzling and similar organisations did not have symbols that looked much like it.
Same google also says that the org that adopted it has since moved away from it since it rubbed some people the wrong way. So if it remains prevalent it is a legacy thing now.

I just think there are too many psychiatrists and psychologists who are diagnosing children with Autism and other mental health disorders and they don't have it my cousin got her 6-year-old daughter on mental health medication and talking about her having Autism doesn't make sense to me?
