Do parents use “autism” as an excuse to describe their children’s behavioral problems?

My girlfriend’s son has no impulse control but she doesn’t reprimand him and gives him whatever he wants. Is it autism or bad parenting?

It's not really in excuse. It's a fact.

I think some parents are embarrassed by their child's behavior and to prevent people from being to harsh and judgmental of their child they let people know their child is behaving a certain way because they have autismn, so people will have more insight into why their child's behaving that way.

I also think some parents overcompensate by giving their autistic child everything they want because they know they'll never lead a "normal" life. Out of compassion and guilt they may let their child get away with anything, without reprimanding them.

I try not to judge or question the parental skills of a parent of an autistic child because everyone is different.

I wouldn't consider it bad parenting. Maybe too lenient.

Autism is an explanation, not an excuse... I have it and my parents are ashamed of it. I have seen other parents coddle though? I doubt that either way is ideal.. I think it should be in the middle but closer to the loving caring treatment than the silence hide and criticize endlessly...

it’s never an excuse, however there is this thing you get irrespective of the child, where parents are basically lazy parents and give in to everything.

this can sometimes be more prevalent with a child diagnosed with behavioural issues, mental or physical issues, where they simply give to placate.

with everyone there needs to be boundaries or limits to acceptable and unacceptable behaviour etc.

Bad Parenting. You should tell her she isn't doing him any favors by spoiling him. He will grow up with more behavioral problems. You shouldn't be looking into a possible future marriage with a Woman who doesn't intend to raise her son to respect others. Because if she doesn't, it will put a hardship on your Marriage.

Yup. Only a very small percentage of people actually have autism or aspbergers. I’ve known a few in my life and it’s fairly obvious. There is no spectrum to the disorder, you’ve got it or you don’t; being quirky and not listening does not mean you have autism.

I have high functioning Aspergers and my brother has autism. Having autism isn't just an 'excuse' and it's a very valid thing, but she shouldn't be giving her son everything she wants and letting him get away with everything. There still needs to be appropriate boundaries and enforced rules. But there are still differences to normal children and those need to be accommodated for.

Well, autistic children can be taught how to behave properly. They need more patience and time than non-autistic children but there is no excuse to use autism to let a child get away with whatever. There may be more understanding if an autistic child slips up once in a while but if they do they should be taught not to and appropriate disciplinary procedures should be carried out.

Impulse control is one of the more challenging aspects of Autism (I say this as an autistic person). A neurotypical person might be able to manage frustration or others okay, but for autistic people, it can be very emotionally overwhelming.

Your girlfriend might know this. But you haven't given enough information to argue whether or not she's handling it well

Depends if the kid is diagnosed with it or not. Then depends on how it effects him.
