Not much, really that they don't know much about themselves as well. They're previous ruler was under the thumb of the British, which is when the Ayatollah's took over. In what has been called the most peaceful coup in history. Although the aftermath was bloody.

Several of my professors in physics and math came from Iran as refugees after that transition, they were good teachers, and solid guys. Iran has a lot of natural resources, they've largely closed themselves off from the world, I think because of their previous interactions with the west and being manipulated by us. It seems likely that they would ally with Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Russia if they already aren't. Also likely that they will, or do have a nuclear program in place.

If they weren't going to have one up before, the stuxnet attack would certainly leave them wanting deterrents from attack and intervention. Out of everyone in the middle east it also seems like they're most likely to make refined products out of oil for export rather than simply pumping raw crude out to be sold cheaply by the barrel.

Seems like though they're under a theocracy, they are thinking ahead to the future, even when they took a US citizen POW years ago, they didn't make a beheading video or anything immeadiately, instead they used him as a bargaining chip with the US for about 5 years. In that region I only really hold out much hope for Turkey and Iran being autonomous. Israel could stand a chance, but they'd have to become extremely aggressive, make allies with Saudi Arabia and Egypt, then swallow Jordan and Lebanon, which they can't do alone with their forces now.

More likely is that Iran will come out of it's semi-isolation to begin swallowing countries around it, particularly Pakistan. Iran is Pakistan's biggest ally, Pakistan is the biggest thorn in Iran's side because of the border they share. I'd imagine a lot of Iranians would like to become Persia again as well, it would be a lot of land to grab, but doable over a few generations.

Along with Greece and China, it has one of the oldest unbroken histories of any place on Earth, dating back to the Achaemenid Empire (550 BC-330 BC), which was the largest empire of its time in terms of both land area (at 5.5 million sq. km, it would be the 7th-largest country on Earth if it existed today, coming behind Australia but being larger than India), and population (ruling over 44% of the world's population at its height, which is the highest share not just of its period but of ALL TIME. For comparison, China AND India TOGETHER comprise 36% of the world's population). It stretched from modern Pakistan in the east to modern Greece and Libya in the west, and contained a multitude of different ethnic groups, who all lived peacefully within its borders. It was undoubtedly one of the most successful states in human history. However, it fell to the Greek Alexander the Great in 331 BC. After Alexander's death, it was ruled by the Greek Seleucids, who were replaced by the Persian Parthians, who fought many battles with the Roman Empire. Eventually, the Parthians were replaced by the Sassanids, who were defeated and conquered by the Arab Muslims in 651 AD. Over the next ~300 years, the Iranians gradually converted to Islam. Over time, the new Muslim Iranians would create other empires such as that of the Samanids (819 AD-999 AD). During this period, Iranian culture was adopted by the Turks who were beginning to rule over this region. Eventually, Persian culture and language would be carried by them as far as Vienna in the west and Bengal in the east. Then, in 1219 came along the extremely destructive (90% of Iran's population was murdered; Iran did not recover the same population until the 1900s) Mongol invasion. Fortunately, Mongol rule ended in 1335, and the Safavid Turks started ruling Iran from 1501 onwards. They restored Iran to its former greatness and fought many battles with the Ottomans to the west and the Mughals to the east. They were Shia Muslims, and under them Iran converted to Shia Islam. Unfortunately, the Safavid empire collapsed in 1736 and a succession of weak rulers of the Zend and Qajar dynasties took over. Under them, Iran suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of the Russians and the British, who practically controlled the country for their own benefit. This went on until 1925, when Reza Shah Pahlavi took over. He rapidly modernised the country until he was forced to abdicate by the British and Russians in 1941. Thereafter, his son took over and continued his father's modernisation until 1979, when an extremist Shia cleric named Ayatollah Khomeini took over in the Islamic Revolution. He established a government run by extremist Shias which continues to this day.

it really really should be a democracy, it’s too proud a country to be under religious rule.

There is also a lot of inaccuracies about Iran, the biggest is that they are not Arabs, so many people try and label them along with Arab countries, well they are Persians.

Europe has had a long historical relationship with Persia, the downfall was really petroleum.

A democratic Iran would add a huge amount of stability to that entire area of the globe.

the chances of that happening now are pretty much nil, the Russians have them in their back pocket and are happy to have them remain as they are..

The UK and France have a lot of Persians that fled the fall of the Shah and we had some at our school, as the UK was building ships for Iran and there were engineers, etc working here, they then stayed and brought families with them.

I have never met an Iranian (none fanatical religious) that I have not liked, especially the girls, who are simply wow.

Back in the 1960s, the father of a school friend would travel to Iran once or twice each year on business (oil industry). He would return home with all sorts of gifts given to him by Iranian friends; including magnificent carpets. As kids, we used to sit on one of those carpets and watch a slide show (anyone else old enough to remember "slides"?) showing photos of Tehran as well as other areas he would visit. I thought that Iran looked amazing and I wanted to go there. Sadly, that never happened. I have traveled quite a bit in Turkey and I've met many Iranians there, as well as in Armenia. They have all been nice; including invitations to stay in their homes if I ever visit Iran- which I hope to do before I die.

One more thing (from a man's point of view): Iranian girls are good looking!

Iran is the land of the Aryans and indo-Iranian race. In ~600bce they created the first expansionist empire under Cyrus the Great and practiced benevolent rule by allowing freedom of religion. Their code of conduct, the Cyrus Cylinder, is now on display at the United Nations.

They have many centuries of Persian culture that inspired changes from Greece to China. The Chinese statue of the lion was introduced partially by the Persians.

They have a long history of poetry and making carpets. Many of the architecture and food we see in India is actually from the Persians during the Mughal empire. Mughal is a Persian term.

In the modern day they practice Shia Islam a sect of Islam that is against the more freedom hating Islam of Sunni Islam from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. They are champions of free thinking and human rights within the Muslim world and should be allies with America but many Americans are too ignorant to see their shared values

Iran is where most of the Middle East unrest comes from. I think they have a problem with Saudi Arabia and US oil contracts. We basically have Iraq as a buffer between these two nations keeping the conflict in that area. I know the country is hard core Muslim. And that’s where they might chop your head off for being an infidel if you arrive as a white westerner.
I also suspect they don’t like alcohol , scantily clad women, gay guys, or drugs, or anykind of edgy humor.
I think they are very anti America and probably not nice too tourists.
