Although it could be very harmful to the development of a person's character, there are good reasons as to why we obsess over brands. We're intelligent animals. And that causes us to form hierarchies & class distinctions based on many important life-altering things. And in this case, wealth is an important resource for people to value because wealth can influence a person's life in very positive ways.
Even though there are negatives to it, people don't think deeply about that. Because to them, the cons don't outweigh the pros. If anything, the pros significantly outweigh the cons. So instead, they passionately focus on how positive it is to be rich & of high status. And in holding these collective values, it simultaneously boosts the status of anyone who is rich, providing more meaning & sustenance to their own beliefs.
I think it's good to think of brands as a form of art. When people buy the art and wear it, it's their way of telling the world what they're attracted to & what they want to be. It's just art with a meaning of value. Monetized art! Creative people have to make a living somehow! And they're the ones behind the designs of the brands.
So, for creative people, it's actually better that the masses are willing to pour their money into things like brands. If the creative people go about marketing their art in a way that would make people want to buy it, something similar to the "obsession" will happen. Which will fill their pockets! It's a win-win!

I have a relative that always buys these expensive brands. She spent 3oo bucks on a pair of sunglasses and accidently ran them over with her car. I laughed when I found out. She always likes to tell people all these stupid things she buys. She buys handbags for 500 bucks that are made in a Chinese sweatshop.
I think my wife's LLBean bag is a better made item for a fraction of the cost.
What's your definition of obsess?
Just because people decide to spend their money on brand name items, doesn't mean they don't appreciate or indulge in music, health, dance.
Fashion is a form of art. Think of buying a "high end brand" as purchasing a work of art.
Just because someone is interested in collecting or buying specific brands doesn't mean they lack personality or don't see the importance of it.
Some people spend their money on fancy dance classes, some people spend their money on fancy art or cooking schools, and some people spend their money on weird Gundam collectable items.
People spend money on where their interests lay. Brand collecting is just another hobby.
Most brands are made by the hands of children in sweatshops

Some brands are better than others. For instance, I prefer to ONLY use Teac and Tascam recording gear because they ONLY make recording gear! Other companies make washing machines, dryers, blenders, stoves, microwaves, etc..
I think that's rich (quite hypocritical) coming from a girl that once claimed she's the most beautiful girl in the world and that all other girls are ugly, "sunflower5363"...
It's the way brands make people feel and how it affects their self perception. Luxury brands, for example, make people feel and perceive themselves as successful.
I guess they want to be with the in crowd
