Why do people think that racism means hate?

Anonymous
Most people didn’t even hate black people since the late 1800s (After slavery was abolished). In some states, it was normal for black people to converse with white people without hate being involved. This didn’t mean that black people were not still seen as different, but hate groups were a minority, and most people knew it was rude to make insulting racial comments to them.
I am aware that some states practices segregation. But even then, most didn’t hate them.
So to me, saying you don’t hate a race doesn’t mean you are not racist. There is more to it and it’s not that simple.
