If a black person has hatred towards whites, is that also racism?

A couple of friends and I were discussing the topic of racism. Someone in the group actually thinks racism only applies if it's the white person with the hatred towards blacks or other minorities, since they are the ones with more privileges and it's more common. He said that if a black hates whites it's likely that they're traumatized due to years of slavery and mistreatment but not racism.

What do you think? If a black person distrusts and hates whites, is that racism?

Where is the word hate in the definition of racism? Just because people are mean to you, doesn't mean they are racist. You're friend is an uneducated moron with a lack of basic critical thinking capability, but based on the little details you provided, the behavior doesn't line up with the meaning of racism.

An example of racism would be: All black people are born with an IQ that is subpar to the White and Asian races. Blacks are incapable of completing basic schooling and should be utilized in performing physical labor. Due to their low IQ, they are an inferior race that is not suitable for higher education.

A racist can see a different race as inferior, but they are still capable of liking and caring for that race. You see this all the time in the Democrat party from leftist communists. They tell Blacks they are not capable of achieving certain things because they are Black. That they are inferior due to systemic racism, but they will help them out and look after them like a good plantation master with government benefits so long as they stay on the plantation and keep voting for them.

That's how racism works... When someone is mean to you and they tell you to stop making excuses and to take responsibility and get off your ass and do something with your life, they are treating you with equality. Race isn't an excuse for failure. They have an expectation for you to perform just as well as any other person of any other race, sex, religion, etc. They can tell you that you're a lazy piece of shit. That you're dumb as a rock. They can tell you that they hate your worthless ass because you are a drain on society. None of that is racism. They are just being mean to you as an individual.

If a black person hates white people that is prejudicial and discriminatory but the reason why people don’t use the word racism is because of the systemic implications of racism, racism is so much bigger than name calling etc.

Since black people hold no societal power over white people that is why people say: “black people can’t be racist towards white people” but the word that is implicit in that sentence is systemically.

Not being a racist though, it can be very discouraging being labelled the same as everyone and having someone automatically assumes you are a racist, when you've done nothing to suggest your are.

If a black parent saw his child playing with a white kid his age (both kids are 8 year-olds) and automatically separates them for no reason, verbally lashing out his hatred towards that 8 year-old white kid, an innocent child.

Yes, hatred breeds contempt, in that example, the black parent would also be handing down their views to their children by separating the children. Which is unfortunate, bc it is obvious the two kids are playing and having fun, so they obviously don't see a color, they just see a friend to play with. We could learn a lot from the two 8 year old's in that instance.

I agree with OfMiceandMen's answer, that is, you can't blame them for hating whites or at least have some ill regard/mistrust for them, because of their history of being mistreated (casually put) in this country. I think it's possible that it may evolve into racism as well. For certain, I'd be afraid to be a Black male driving in a car at this times, which seems ridiculous when you think about it--but many do take precaution and it's understandable.

Someone else here made a good point. We wouldn't consider it racism if Ukranians hated Russians. Racism isn't quite the term, but I'm too tired to find the right term. Ultimately, the hate a black person would have for white people, would be the symptom of slavery, Jim Crowe, redlining, police brutality, etc. So its not generally the same as racism white people have for black people. Basically, correlation does not imply causation.

Yes, it is 100% racism if a black person hates another race, even if that race is white. Can it be argued that that racism is justified? Perhaps. Is it nearly as harmful as a white person being racist toward black people? Probably not. (Difference between making fun of a rich person and making fun of a poor person. It's ok to punch up, but not to punch down.)

But if the question is strictly "Is it racism?" The answer is a solid "Yes."
