How can the right make the statement “slavery was so long ago, get over it”?

I hear this a lot from the right but it really doesn’t make since to me because they say that the left lives in the past but at the drop of a hat will say democrats are racist because they fought for slavery and made Jim crow laws, but wait isn’t that in the past too huh imagine that 🤔

Republicans want to call themselves the party of Lincoln so they can claim his legacy as the great emancipator.

What they don't realize is that he didn't just free the slaves, he set in motion the redistribution of the property owned by the masters to the former slaves (a decision rescinded after his assassination leading to the system of sharecropping).

If they want to claim the legacy of Lincoln, own it and start giving the deeds to the rented properties in black neighborhoods from the owners to the tenants.

IMHO, if the government is suppose to make reparations to injured ethnicities from actions done over a hundred years ago, they need to start with Native Americans way before anyone else.

With the historical slavery issue, it really doesn't have a place for the issues faced today since no one living today was personally a slave in the 1860's so it does not directly affect them.

Issues that directly affect people is what should be addressed.

It may be that you can make an argument that makes slavery a good topic for you in the hope that you personally can potentially make your world a better place.

200 hundred years isn’t a long time, think about it like this that can be two lives. This is my problem with the right, they act like slavery was a million years ago and black people got reparations and everything is just magically fixed in this country.

Well, blacks actually have with affirmative action, welfare, SBA loans, minority set-asides, etc., and that's assuming that reparations were actually justified. Magically fixed? No, because Democrats want a large black underclass dependent on their government programs, because of the weakening of the black family, outsourcing of much of US manufacturing, illegal immigration, and the weakening of US schools as well as assuming failure and widespread discrimination. But it's worked out well for a significant number of African Americans.

Affirmative action made things equal it didn’t give black people a leg up it leveled the playing field and welfare isn’t exclusively for black people and it doesn’t benefit all black people and SBA loans have nothing to do with black people so I don’t even know what you are talking about there

-So why should there be a leg up? And I'd disagree with your contention that it didn't where it has been applied.
-Welfare has disproportionately been given to nonwhites for decades- it's only supposed to be given to those who DO need it. Those who don't need it don't need any extra leg up, but they get affirmative action.

But building stronger black families is something that can't be done from the outside, and that would be the most beneficial thing that could occur at this point.

Reparations were supposed to be given out when slavery first ended but clearly the US didn’t hold up that deal and how can republicans call themselves the party of Lincoln when they are so opposed to reparations. Wasn’t Lincoln the one that wanted to give reparations to former slaves?

Who is to even say what Lincoln's plan was? He was assassinated the year reconstruction began. The only plan we know for sure he had that he had a lenient plan to get the states back into the union. I believe he also proposed to take the former slaves back to Africa if they wanted to, not because he is a racist but the slaves were literally taken from Africa so they will have an opportunity to see their family again. I don't know how true the last one is though.

Regardless, that sounds like a more useful method of reparations than just taking money from those who never owned slaves and giving it to black people who were never slaves. Especially now since the dollar is being devalued due to all the printing.

Yes. When the left brings up slavery, they often accompany it with some sort of demand for reparation.

When conservatives bring up the left's history with racism, it's often in response to the left's claim of the allegedly oppressive and racist history of conservatives.

Conservatives don't randomly say "hey, you were racist. You should give us something as payment." Unlike when the left randomly mentions slavery.

Slavery is something people need to get over. You can't cling onto it forever. When people claim you have done X in the past, but ironically it is them who have done X in the past, it's justified to point out their hypocrisy. There's nothing hypocritical about the left randomly mentioning slavery. These two things simply aren't comparable.

Okay. How much are they owed? How much needs to be paid by the Africans who caught and sold them to us? How are you going to check which white people who immigrated to the US after slavery ended in order to determine who's ancestry supposedly has to pay? How are you going to get governments outside of the US who are inevitably harboring some people who's ancestors owned slaved in America to force their citizens to pay reparations? And are we going to any stop at black people? Or does any lineage who has been enslaved deserve reparations? How are you going to determine who was and who wasn't?
