If you look at the entire history of slavery, white people have been enslaved far more than black people. The slavery issue in the USA is a joke. Blacks make up 13% of the population. They already recieve over 40% of government benefits. If you turn on tv, black people are the majority in every tv program. Blacks are represented at better than 60% on tv and in movies. The studios have recently said they will not make any more sitcoms featuring a white family. The push is on to change established white characters to black ones. Historical dramas, which are supposed to be historically accurate, are replacing white historical figures with black ones. This includes claiming that vikings were black. Black people play the race card, and call for reparations, yet they don't seem to care at all that the same slave markets in Africa that sold slaves to the white man are still in business today, and are operated by descendants of the original slavers! There are over 10 million slaves on the market in Africa right now and not one African-American gives a damn. Why not demand reparations from these people?

i used to ask this question too but then i realised that america's history is too embedded in slavery and death and the legacies of slavery continue today - i mean yes there's problems in most countries where colonialism played a big role in its history but i think america is a different story because it was taken from native americans and its economy was built on slave labour and the oppression of black people continued into the 20th century - yes things are much better but there are still problems and ignoring/dismissing the importance of slavery in American history is a bit stupid

What you claim is "Whining" is actually just acknowledgment that over 150 years they're still dealing with reverberations of it. This country IS NOT equal. Not by a long shot!

Whether you like it or not slavery will always be linked to racism and the institutionalized racism that is still very much present in the US. I think if talking about slavery makes you uncomfortable, you really need to re-evaluate your morals.

You are mistaken. As OP points out, the word slave comes from “slav”, as in the slavic peoples. They’re white. They’re ALL white, and there’s little argument for whitER peoples anywhere else on the planet in all of human history. Ell oh ell! Africans enslaved other Africans and sold or traded them to Europeans. Slavery has literally never been about race. It’s only recently been politicized that way in the US. There were black slave owners in the US, along with white slaves elsewhere on the planet. There’s reason to believe there were white Irish slaves here before it was the US, and some argue after.

The horrors of black slavery at the hands of European colonists in the USA have no parallels in world history.
There is a very long list of horrors that some American apologists want us all to forget.
Here are some of these horrors :
1) Human zoos where Blacks are put in cages with monkeys and presented to visitors as the missing links in the theory of evolution
2) Hanging trees and bridges aka Lynching.
3) The one drop rule which still is very much an active assignment.
4) Black babies used as alligator baits
5) There was even a Slave Bible
6) Black codes which still is alive and well today.
7) Tons of anti-black imagery that can fill entire museums (sambos, gollywogs, caricatures etc.)
8) The history of Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade sanitized and edited to erase the memory of all the Africans who opposed, fought against it and were massacred. Millions of Africans died during anti-slavery wars and slave revolts in Africa and in the Americas let alone the suppressed slave revolts on slave ships bound to Americas
9) Shoes or clothes made from the skin of African slaves (human leather)
This led us to know where there's...
10) Constant negative media coverage and cinema portrayals
11) Racial segregation with police dogs and batons (police brutality, Jim Crow laws)
12) Blacks used as guinea pigs in unethical and controversial clinical trials.
The USA is one of the few countries where plantation slavery was converted into penal slavery.

And that's only a few. All races have been subjected to slavery, some worse than others to the point where it's embedded in history and still affects groups until today. White slavery hasn't impacted whites at all, if so barely. Africans enslaved and sold other Africans just like the Whites enslaved and sold other whites too. The etymology of the word Slavery and slave doesn't matter as long as the meaning is still there.

What does slavery have to do with us knowing our history? Slaves weren't writing down events in logs.
Europeans were sailing the globe and building grand cathedrals while blacks were living in mud huts and hunting and gathering.
Sure, blacks had "empires", but their influence never stretched outside their geographic area. Every other major civilization, Europeans, Asians, Muslims, Polynesians, Native Americans. They all influenced the world outside of their geographic area. But not blacks. Blacks didn't start having an impact on global society until the slave trade. Blacks were never sailed or conducted long distance trade.

Are you serious? Native Americans traded with Europeans and other tribes. Some even established alliances, intermarried and some were even taken back to Europe.

Archaeological evidence was found suggesting that Polynesians made it to what's now the Pacific NW.
They found Inca constructions on Easter Island, evidence that they traded and interacted.
Thor Hyerdahl proved that South Americans could have sailed to the Polynesian islands on wooden rafts.
