Remember what civil liberties were fought for and won. That took sacrifice.
Remember the uphill battles of past. They are guides to a more peaceful future, and important lessons to remember.
Forgetting is not possible. Nor is it positive.
Remembering mistakes is how we make sure we don't do them again in the future.
Ever met someone who forgets the mistakes they make? They make the same ones again and again.
That's a shitty thing to wish on America and I hate America. Even I wouldn't want them to forget. That's, again, immensely disrespectful.

We have forgotten the history of native Americans. A better word was “forgive” or moved past it. We have been forgiven and moved on for the bombing of Japan during world war 2
Why not talk about the billions enslaved thou out history, or the 12+ million enslaved still today, instead of just focusing it on the few million enslaved and freed in this one country?
A country that is only unusual in the history of the institutions only in that it actually was among the first to talk about and free said slaves.
The amount of attention given to this one issue and aspect of history is both absurdly disproportionate and un-conserned with its nature.
Hence why its quite plainly obvious that this particular cherry picked history is obsessed over for political not moral or historical reasons.
@monorprise Yes exactly this. Nobody talks about the enslavement of Europeans, Christians and Slavic peoples, or even the Arab and African-on-African slavers (which still operate in some places).

What is unusual about America is not that we had 4+ million slaves in 1860 but that we freed them before most everyone else on earth even thought there was anything wrong with the institution.
Likewise what was unusual about America's founding was not that we tolerated slavery but that we begin to debate and make moves to end slavery. The Deceleration of independence was a deceleration not just of the independence of 13 states but the rights of mankind. From it and the ideas of the men who wrote it ideologically came the end of slavery, an institution not hundreds but countless thousands of years old.

but also notice that it was the rich aristocrats who profited even from this... anyone who blames "The British" or "White Americans" are passing the blame away from the real culprits and onto the innocent; the average person, whom held no power or say in the matter. People who lived under their lord or landowner were vote-less serfs - a different category of servitude, but servitude nonetheless.
@Bl0n6eguy Even in the 19th century Europeans (including the British and their cultural kin us Americans) were a small minority of the world. Indeed the efforts to combat the slave trade illustrate this fact. There would be no such trade if slavery were not so widely accepted around the world. @goaded enumeration of British acts and enforcement only reinforces the unusual cultural attitude toward slavery among this European culture. As it happens U. S. Congress acted the same year to outlawed the slave trade.
Slavery nonetheless continued around much of the world which did not share English speaking values on the subject regardless.

Court ruling in 1700: "As soon as a man sets foot on English ground he is free", so I guess like some of the US states in the late 18th century. @monorprise It didn't matter if they agreed, they had to follow the law. Like the southern states in the US, 30 years later.
There's a big difference between "the majority" and "a small minority", and the British Empire was in there. 1814 population: 61 million, 1888: 306 million, from a total population of the world of about a billion.

As for the remaining 3/4th of the planet including many areas claimed by the British empire, they were quite clearly not following any such law, nor did they support it. This is not to say the British with a dominance of the worlds oceans didn't have an impact, but that impact was in fact commanded by the will of a small minority in England. Not even the entire population which numbered less than 20 million.
@goaded No I'm just illustrating the fact that only a very small minority of the worlds population was against the institution of slavery at the time. That just happens to be one of the only unusual attributes of the English speaking worlds relations with the institution.
@goaded I think men were created equal and have the right to govern themselfs to the limits of the terms of any contract they might agree with others. To that end Slavery is a violation of said natural rights without any contract much like lawless Government both are evils for they deprive men of their freedom.
The fact however is in the State of Nature and among most people's around the world in history slavery could exist.
@monorprise The impetus for getting rid of slavery didn't come from the United States though, did it? It largely came from the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and didn't become illegal in the US until a generation after the British Empire had done the same.

Forgive who? Who in the world am I to forgive? I don't know the "White" dudes who chased me with golf clubs and bats. I don't know the "White" dudes who threw rocks and bricks at me. If they ever came up to me and apologized, I would hope I could forgive them.
But I was never a slave. My mother was born to some sharecroppers in Arkansas. . . maybe she deserves an apology. My father was born to a teenage mother and throughout his youth, they were literally starving on the street. Maybe he deserves an apology. But I never had to hear about "Black" people being lynched in the next town. I never had my life threatened because of my skin color. . . and know that I could be killed with no justice for my family. I never fought in a war like my father only to come back to insane racism.
I don't know how he felt about this nation before he passed, but he did get a chance to see a "Black" President. Maybe that was enough for him. I don't know. I wasn't concerned about that during the later stages of his life. I was trying to reconcile with him about our relationship. I wasn't worry about his feelings on racism.
But there are folks who lived through the Greenwood massacre. There are folks who's parents lived through the St. Louis massacre.
They should not be forgotten, in fact they should be taught and more importantly taught how and why they happened. Not just that they happened. That is pointless. The annoyance comes from people lazer focusing on USA and trashing it when all through out history there is great evil (some much much worse than what usa has ever done) But they only seem to care when the USA did it because they are some brain washed liberal who has been taught to hate the USA

@userxvi It is just a weird point. You can say the same thing about every atrocity. There were Jews who helped throw other Jews into the ovens. Many surviving Jews did all manner of despicable acts to other Jews to survive. Russians were literally killing German soldiers, torturing them, starving them by the end of the war. But no one remembers the Nazis as the good guys.
And its funny, I went to a public school for the first three years of my education. And we didn't learn anything about Columbus murdering Indigenous folks or the genocides of American Indian tribes. We learned about massacres like Fort Dearborn, where "Whites" were killed by American Indians. In fact that is my earliest memory of any story from history.
It was only when I became an adult did I become aware of specific genocides and atrocities. . . but most importantly I became aware of how different groups obtained their rights in this nation.
It is just one of the weirdest things to see a man so racially connected to the past such that it is insulting to admit that the United States had such serious issues. The state refused to extend rights and freedoms to other groups and it was literally comfortable with state sanctioned murder, to prevent those groups from realizing their Constitutional privileges.
But you don't connect to the fight for these rights. Apparently, you don't think your rights could ever be taken away. You don't identify with John Brown, a "White" man who took up arms to free "Black" slaves.
You don't identify with James Zwerg, a "White" man beaten up with John Lewis.
Many American Indians have substantial European dna and heritage. But you do not identify with their struggle. . . even as they lay claim to being "White" too. . .
And it is like your point is confused. We don't remember Americans murdering Germans at Normandy even as they tried to surrender. Because again, we don't remember the Nazis in a favorable light.

It will not be dropped from cherry picked focus until it ceases to be politically useful. The fact is slavery is one of the worlds oldest and most wide spread institutions, in practice even today with an estimated 12 million enslaved on the lower end.
The only thing particularly unusual about American or more broadly western slavery is the fact that it was ended by Americans/western, at a time when nearly all the rest of the world still thought little wrong with the then ancient institution.
That we are so obsessed with the end of slavery for about 4 million 150+ years ago while completely billions previously enslaved, and ignoring the ongoing slavery of around 12 million today around the world is entirely political.
A country can have a horrific past, and still become a great country. Just look at the UK and Germany.

It will exist as long as it keeps being brought up. Just look at the trade of white slaves in Europe, or black slaves in the middle east (which is still a thing). Nobody talks about them because they're not politically advantageous.
You in America are obsessed with hating caucasians for slavery, and ignoring the African slavers who attacked, captured and sold rival tribesmen long before caucasians and hebrews came (do your history).
Follow the Italians and just Stop it. The Romans slaughtered and enslaved Christians of all nationalities at first, but they repented and did not attack or blame their descendants forevermore like the US.

People have feeble memories, things are easy to forget if people change their attitudes and behaviours. The reason it persists is because the vast majority of people of colour see a certain type of behaviour from Americans that raises questions, when they research the history, that fuels the fire.🔥In short, it's not history if the behaviour is still going on in the presence and it's not easy to trust a person who's not sincerely trying to change. people are going crazy with things that happened a hundred plus years ago. Insread of working to make sure the story is told with all the correct information possible and make sure it never happen to anyone anywhere. They change history to suit their story. and out right lie like the 1619 crap. Instead of rising to stop world wide slave trade happening everyday in Africa to mostly Black and Brown people by mostly Black and Brown people and educate people how it happens and why. Education before demonstrations
It’s kind of already been forgotten. There are a lot of facts that we’re not supposed to talk about, like black slave owners and black slave traders, and white slaves. Why do those facts never come up? If you’re not telling the whole truth, then you’re not telling the truth. If you’re not telling the truth, then you’re just weaving a web of lies and misinformation. I’m willing to bet three quarters of the US population would fail a simple test over the facts of slavery in this country.
I don't think the USA will be the same in even 30 years. The nation is already shattered, the question is whether the divorce will be peaceful or bloody.
The United States will most likely not exist in 200 years. Reasons will include the systematic oppression of its minority white population, failed woke model that actually cost the nation its security, failed economy thanks to Marxism, and losing all identity as a nation due to liberalism.
It shouldn't be forgotten, it should be a reminder of how far we have come as a nation to where the vast majority of people will not agree to our past actions. It should be an inspiration to continue fixing mistakes we have today.

History should be told as accurately and honestly as possible. It will never be forgiven. We can keep spending trillions on anti-poverty programs and have another fifty years of affirmative action and people will act like slavery ended last week.

You have to hate the entire world then if it's about slavery. Slavery is not exclusive to the United States. It was Worldwide for centuries. I think that needs to be brought up and acknowledged so people know that. Yes, slavery was wrong and history shouldn't be forgotten as it's there to learn from the past, but we need to bring up everything and not just pick on the United States because that would be dishonest.
What people need to realize is that America freed the slaves. It was the English who brought them here. And they can keep their crummy healthcare system, too.
