Why is the military mostly conservative?

It used to be mostly conservative in the military. Having been out for a while I’m not sure how much things have changed. It’s clear many of the top brass have gone work or are at least willing to tow that line for their position weather or not they believe in they type of ideology.

The reasons, as I see them are as follows. Typically those joining the military are patriots or do it for patriotic reasons. It is crystal clear the leftists hate America so they’re not interested in that manner of thing. Many leftists tend to view the military and police as authoritarian fascists. They see men with guns willing to do violence, being rough n tough, largely being masculine and disciplined and they don’t like it. In their minds these people are Nazis, they just wear a different uniform. Leftists have an amazing lack of comprehension that evil (real evil) exists in the world. In regards to the military we know that you essentially need trained killers who are skilled in the arts of war, preferable those who may like war. These people scare the crap out of leftists. Martial artists, military, militias, police, spy’s. They seem to loathe these people, viewing them as violent men looking for do harm. The difference between most of these types and common thugs is they do in fact do harm and violence when called for, but it’s on principal rather than indiscriminate. Lefts seem to have trouble differentiating this. They’d rather live in a fantasy land where such men aren’t needed and seem to despise them because there is a role to do such duties and a place where these men are encouraged to be violent in the capacity of their duties.

Leftists by nature seem to be undisciplined and lazy. They seem to loathe structure, rules, regulations, and societal roles. They seem to have this mentality of “everyone just do what you want.” Yet another reason they’d hate the military. The military is ultra masculine by nature, leftists seem to be anything but. Many leftists don’t like sports like boxing, wrestling, football, hockey, lacrosse, MMA. Sports that involve pummeling the crap out of other people. It takes balls, it take courage and discipline and sacrifice and a willingness to endure hardship to play such sports, all things most leftists seem to shirk. Leftists seem to hate authority when it’s not their authority. They hate cops, but love the tyrant we have in the White House.

Most military types tend to be down to earth, practical, objective thinkers, rational. If they’re not the military will make them so. They tend to see the world as more black and white. Someone in the military may say: “I agreed with Trumps idea to stop Muslims from Immigrating to the U. S., we need to vet these people and ensure we’re not bringing in terrorists, not to mention the religion seeks the destruction of infidels and to establish a world wide caliphate, why let them in? They’re potentially dangerous.” The leftist will call such people a racist and they seem to think we have this whole brotherhood of man thing going on and we should never be suspicious of people from different religions or countries, and were all one big happy family.” They forget we’ve been fighting these people since about 1990, and there have been several attacks on US soil since and that ulterior motives may exist for immigration. Since we don’t know who is who, better to keep them all out until we do and know the likelihood of threat or harm is very low. Yet another place leftists seem to be out of touch with practical reality.

I think this is only beginning to explain this issue, but I’ll pause here.

I think a lot of it has to do with conservatives being stronger advocates for a strong military, and doing more to provide better quality of life for the military and family members. Some of that seems to be changing though.

I believe that it is fear that makes many people lean to the left. People who are motivated by fear are less likely to volunteer for military service.

Well, the military, is filled with tradition, which hasn’t changed for awhile.

Conservatives, “conservatism” is the act of conserving what is good and what works.

Not changing.

Lots of things in the military have been around since it’s inception.

Certain standards, customs and courtesies, etc

Beyond that, personalities of conservatives in the US seems to be of discipline, love of country, individual freedoms and rights, etc.

There’s roots tying all of this to early citizens who took up arms against tyrants who sought to control/enslave the population.

I’m talking about the American Revolution.

I can perhaps talk more on this but I’ll leave it at that.

For the UK, it’s not as clear cut (some generalising here).

your average army infantry guy invariably comes from a Labour held area
(Labour sit a good bit left of your Democrats, with a number of real communist types).

They will usually be pretty firm Labour supporters on joining, some remain Labour, especially if from a mining area.

then longer people stay in they will vote for whatever party is giving them decent pay rises and equipment.

Seniors are pretty much always Conservative but some officers are also Labour.

Historically the military voted conservative, then New Labour, then Conservative as the only option was Corbyn Labour, next election it’s likely going to be split between Labour and Conservatives.

Go into it as a conservative come out as more independent i would say. And why? I would assume to the fact military is a nationalist thing, very tribal in that sense. Conservatives tend to lean into tribal things and beliefs been facts, and the sense that one must carry on traditional stuff to them.
Therefore the propaganda of war can lean to them especially when USA was ageist china with all it's racist propaganda ageist Chinese people, about how there always sneaky and evil no matter what.
I think this lines up pretty well with conservative views with there examples of views on other races.

Though one cannot forget it really depends on what war and when and what reason. Because i think this would be very different if you were to mention been a Russian solider for example back in 1940s less likely conservative more just doing what you had to live really.

Navy, actual veteran from the Navy. Its an easy answer. Why are men in general more conservative. why are people who support the constitution more likely to be conservative. Its constitutional. Love guns. I am more of a libertarian , but its a fairly easy thing to see, why men and military's men or even military women , Wholesomely believe in a meritocracy , and furthermore a side that always supports the 27 amendments. 2% of U. S citizens qualify to be in the military. so we get told we are the best and earned it. and we aren't the best.. but some of us are and a lot of vets are really great people. I have a bias, but thats theirs too.

Because, in war, you have to be responsible for, and take care of, yourself, otherwise you die.

Responsibility is the main difference between liberals and conservatives.

Liberals want someone else (the government) to take care of you, while Conservatives want you to take care of yourself.

I guess that really depends on what you mean by "Conservative". In terms of old fashioned Conservative values/principles, it makes sense.

1. A valid concern about U. S. involvement in Foreign Affairs. Making sure that we are engaged in this global debate about democracy.

2. A founding Conservative principle of the nuclear family. Military families span decades, even centuries.

3. The "old" Conservative values of honor, duty and purpose.

1st is that conservatives generally revere and respect the military, whereas the majority of Anti Military people are Left leaning. Similarly the demographics of the Military. There are a lot of Norteños (Not the gangs, but Northerner Mexicans who are typically sepparate from the rest of Mexico and closer to the US as well as Mexicans in the south US Especially Texas). Incredibly conservative lot they are. Most Latinos I met were Norteños, Cuban, Puerto Rican or fleeing Venezuela. Also a lot of other Foreigners from Traditional conservative countries like Nigeria, India, Nepal. Also a lot of Vietnamese Thai Cambodian... etc. Basically the vast majority of Foreigners in the Military are or were fleeing a Socialist/Communist Hellhole and want nothing to do with the Democrat party. Or they're just Africain and therefore super religious and hate Black American culture.

Because military without strict and conservative rules would be easily defeated by any more organised enemy.

If I am not mistaken, military is about following routines and being able to trust that others are doing the same. Knowing that if one gets under fire, others will follow protocols, and will return the fire instead of running away and abandoning the soldier.

The core fighting force (those sent into combat) are highly conservative and the rest of the military tends to be mixed or leftist. The top brass are now heavily left-wing and acting to purge key personnel who are not left-wing.

The military represents a love of tradition , or keep old school values. The mind set of conservatives is more in step with the military ; rules , laws , traditions , follow the set standard etc.

Liberals are more apt to question an existing system and defy it or try to change it. This would not fly well in the military.
