It's not about diversity per se, it's about the fact that the form of diversity being pushed by the American left has absolutely nothing to do with ideological diversity, and systems and organizations funded by the political and economic elite running in parallel to pro-diversity activism are increasingly suppressing it to the point of creating hostile work environments to anyone who isn't sufficiently leftist, or is sufficiently leftist but not sufficiently racially-obsessed. This is most prominently seen in academia, especially the social sciences, and Silicon Valley corporations.
People are getting tired of this nonsense, and it's not just conservatives. Moderates, progressives who see through the lens of class rather than race, and the idea that there is only one race - the human race - which was once a leftist rallying cry for racial equality and still is in a number of European countries, are all being attacked by the ideological movements that are pushing the Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion programs that are being complained about. This is not isolated to the US either, the French government has taken an aggressive stance against what they see as foreign racial nonsense that threatens the celebrated French values of equality, liberty, and fraternity.
If you think you can fix racial discrimination with more racial discrimination, you are a fool. The backlash will undo any progress that has been made, and in fact it already is.
The hard truth is that this word, when applied, actually means Divisibility; the dividing and devaluing of people along ethnic and social castes.
Variety is the honourable outcome, where people are there by choice and merit; but Diversity means refusing to hire that guy because he doesn't meet the quota, or the skin/gender/sexual identity were after.
It's also a dirty word due to its use as a justification to silence or devalue other people's life experiences or personal circumstances because they share the same skin colour or sex as successful or wealthy people.
The most troubling thing associated with this word is the attached hatred and loathing it's wielders hold and teach towards Caucasians. "Positive Discrimination" and "Raising Voices Up" has lead to vulnerable people being denied opportunities they need due to their innate characteristics, and an institutional ignorance towards the thoughts feelings, and lives of those they aim to speak over.
A truly varied society should tend to everyone. Diversity aims to attack the majority group, undermine their rights, stations, and say in society for the supposed "greater good" - which has lead to racist and sexist excuses such as "destroying whiteness", "patriarchy" etc.

The left believes diversity means different skin color, gender or sexuality. In reality , true diversity is the difference of thought. The former diversity director of Apple ( a black woman ) was fired for saying this... oh the irony.

Because diversity of skin color, sexuality, or gender, is irrelevant and isn't what makes a person matter. I believe a Doctor once said this sometime in the 60s. Who was it, again? Ah, it doesn't matter.
Regardless, putting a rainbow of NPC's who spew the same bigoted bullshit about "CIS white men being evil" is not diversity; it's a rainbow of insecure losers who spew bigoted horseshit to mask their own failures in life. ACTUAL diversity, where the term originated from, is diversity of thought, something the left fails at right now, hence being called NPC's (the non-player characters in video games scripted to just parrot what they've been coded to say) in the first place.
The non-radical-left (this includes people in the center, like myself) hate the idea of putting incompetent people in jobs based on superficial traits like race and sexuality, which is not the same as only wanting "CIS white men" to work at your job. But why would another NPC BLM SJW understand this?

It is not a dirty word but some people may object to certain groups getting special treatment and getting hired for jobs, not on their merit but because they are member of a protected class. They realize it breeds mistrust and contempt and is also inefficient.
