They're not - since at least the 1940s, they've actually been an unlikely alliance of two separate groups, who otherwise have nothing else in common.

1.) The rich, who are only interested in fiscal issues (tax breaks, deregulation, etc), and don't care at all about social issues. These are the ones bankrolling the operation, but there aren't enough of them to win any kind of election, which is why they need the support of...

2.) White trash, who are only interested in social issues - particularly those relating to religion (specifically Christianity) such as abortion - and gun rights. This is a convenient group for big business to ally with, as their interests, while very different, don't conflict or cost them anything.

Republicans (and conservatives in general) are for businesses and individual freedoms, because they believe that businesses create jobs so that individuals can not only survive, they can improve themselves; and for less government, because businesses and people do best with less regulations.
