Unlike the men, there's nothing from the Ukrainian law standpoint preventing them from fleeing the country, so the "call to serve" so to speak is more genuine.
On the other hand, it's largely a propaganda move, and the impact of civilian/paramilitary resistance is a dubious endeavour, especially in a conflict in which both sides are constantly making absurd claims about their successes (and losses) in battle. It is very easy to exploit a disastrous effort by irregular forces as a "civilian massacre" so they are often used as cannon fodder, and it's also commonplace for a whole spectrum of reasons to film or photograph different people posing with weapons and kit "doing their part" or "fighting for fascism" depending on who's reporting. This is also in a conflict in which most countries sending "aid" have sent only enough ammunition for a battalion-size force (<1,000) soldiers to go on a single combat patrol, while engaged in a war that by an average of estimates is inflicting military losses on both sides at a rate that hasn't really been seen since World War 2. What's more valuable to Ukraine? Some ex-models proclaiming their patriotism and willingness to fight in an effort to win over more support from western nations to supply arms and ammo, or an informally trained guerilla who lacks basic equipment? It is unquestionably the former. You really do have to take everything no matter who it comes from with a dose of salt.

Both admirable AND stupid. Ukraine doesn't really have a chance; the Russian army's simply too big, and they spent too long waiting on NATO to change their minds after the rejection was decided on, rather than finding other allies. Given that Russia invaded and stole Crimea from them eight years ago, it's not like this threat was distant and theoretical, either. What they CAN do- what'll probably end up happening- is that Putin will seize most of the country, but the Ukrainians will begin a partisan campaign to drive them out, much the Afghans did. Russia's economy is only slightly larger than that of Florida; they can't afford to occupy a country almost as large as France. They'll eventually be driven out.
The reason the media keeps banging on about this is to appeal to humanity's instincts to protect women; that some women chose to stay and fight a war against a hopelessly superior enemy shows just how bad it is. That their brothers, fathers, husbands, and sons are thrown into a meat grinder to suit the whims of politicians ought to make every last one of them question whether the country's actually worth defending- but cognitive dissonance never goes down easy. Funny how fast human rights die out when the humans in question have a Y chromosome.
I understand the desire to protect everything you love, and hold close to your heart. They are exceptionally determined.
I respect this quality, because I have never seen so many people prepared to do this, for the love of their land before with no previous experience. The sheer determination is unbelievable.
However, the logical part of my brain is deeply concerned, that no crash course in combat can ever truly prepare anyone for a real life battle. Then again, what is their alternative at this point? So, I understand why they are doing this. Their sense of community is phenomenal.
I pray for their protection and that peace talks happen soon. We need the world to look for peace, so not to prolong this horror.
Quiet simply, Ukrainians and Russians should not be fighting. Many of them have family members and relations from the other side. It must feel incredibly wrong. This should never have ever happened in the first place 🥀
I say admirable, cause they are the first ones that are going to be raped if they lose. If they flee they'll never be able to return home.
Personally I'd rather die fighting than become a bunch of horny Russian soldiers conquests.

Yeah, you keep posting the same stuff.
Ukrainians will never give up their culture. If you are going to deny a Ukrainian the freedom to access their culture, speak their language and remember their history, you will have to kill them.
It doesn't matter to you. I get it.
But to them, their culture is the only meaningful thing they have.
In 1932 and 1933, millions of Ukrainians were killed in the Holodomor, a man-made famine engineered by the Soviet government of Joseph Stalin. The primary victims of the Holodomor (literally "death inflicted by starvation") were rural farmers and villagers, who made up roughly 80 percent of Ukraine's population in the 1930s. While it is impossible to determine the precise number of victims of the Ukrainian genocide, most estimates by scholars range from roughly 3.5 million to 7 million (with some estimates going higher). The most detailed demographic studies estimate the death toll at 3.9 million. Historians agree that, as with other genocides, the precise number will never be known. You of course realise they Ukrainians have allowed women to serve for a while?

From 1993 and from 2014 when the war started.
Their conscription also contains a lot of women

Americans and their view of the world 🤦It is all three of those but when you're back into a corner what are you going to do sit in the corner are you going to get up and fight we're all going to die sometime I would die for my country I've had that opportunity before it didn't quite happen that way I look at the men and the women and the boys and the girls of Ukraine are my heroes because they are standing up and they're fighting they are saying fuck you to a mentally Disturbed man because of ego and what he wants Ukraine people are still Russian he's killing his own people they're humans is killing his own people for greed and because he wants to be a big shot it's not quite working out the way he thinks it was going to and I'm proud how the Ukraine people for making that happen
Each and every day in life we are challenged this has to be the biggest challenge of all those people's lives I think in America the same thing would happen let's just hope one day we don't have to prove thatIt will be interesting to see whether Zelensky or his oligarch sponsor Ihor Kolimoisky take a crash course or whether they end up in their mansions after they encourage common people to sacrifice their lives in a war that they know they will lose. It will be interesting to see if Biden sends Hunter or any Western politician sends their kids to Ukraine to take a crash course and fight. After all, the children of Biden, Kerry, Pelosi, Romney, and others got gas company board positions in Kiev for which they were not qualified.
The "girl boss" fighter woman trope is getting old. It's great in movies but in reality women tend to be significantly less relaible in wars. Now granted, a large portion of the fighting women in Ukraine are actually serving in the armed forces by volunteer so they are probably much better than the average "girl boss" fighter but still.
I remember the media parroting all these images of "brave" women in Afghanistan who were going to stick it to the evil patriarchal Taliban! Sure enough Kabul fell within days. This is one of those things I really adore in modern women.
They don't have to give up their lives to die in a battle (which was invoked by those political brutes), yet here they are being strong and independent. They got real ovaries, no time for gaining fame on Instagram!
I almost wish they wouldn't dedicate their life to fight battles. But then again I think pretty much no one deserves being shot like a fox to death for these senseless wars, which were created by only a few bad guys at the top of the social hierarchy.Admirable, but definitely more risky and dangerous for them if they head to the frontlines.
I will take a woman who can fight, but they better understand what is expected of them in performing to standard and what can potentially happen should they be captured. To ''fight for your country'' means actually that you risk getting killed because your leaders (and the ones on 'the other side') are incapable of negotiating things on a civilized level.
''You'' waste your life and your value. ''You'' pay for the mistakes of others.
I WOULD understand if people take self defense training to make their own -and individual- lives safer.I can understand it. I wouldn't want to leave my spouse or my family members to die alone on the front while I'm hiding in a building, hoping the russian army will be nice to me when they finally capture the place.
I just dislike war, and the whole bullshit about heroics built around it. I can understand it. I can forgive it. But there's nothing admirable about loss of human life.admirable, but at the same time too reckless in my opinion, if you're just taking a basic course. i think that there should be at least 2 years of training before a person is allowed to fight.
If they can handle the recoil and manage not to shoot a friendly I'm cool with it. AKs are though the last thing I'd give a woman. O. O the recoil on those are horrible even with the custom attachments. Lol.
Admirable, but it’s a bit late. There’s no way there’re going to be prepared to do any fighting. It’s only as an absolute last resort. Any sensible country would have citizens with militia training long before any wars occurred. Ukraine starting training and handing out guns AFTER the beginning of the war is obviously a problem.
It's a sign that Ukrainians as a whole (men and women) are willing to fight to save their country. It would be good if more people outside Ukraine were like that.
I'm not a supporter of women in frontline combat roles but when the enemy is literally in your country then I say the more soldiers the better.
It's the right thing to do in a defensive war. They didn't cause the war but they can either finish it or make the enemy pay a too high price for what they get.
Admirable. Also, sad. This is the world's battle. He will just try to take over everyone.
Noble and stupid. They're not going to beat the Russian military.
Admirable. Zellensky isn’t letting any men 18 - 60 to leave the Ukraine. They have to fight. But these women are voluntarily doing this.
It's their country. Admirable to say the least. I would hope that, if we were ever invaded like that, every man, woman, boy, and girl that can hold and fire a weapon, would be on the front lines.
