What do you think is the real purpose of making so many nukes?

You can hear many excuses why but i actually like you think it's just to show off. Can't think of a good reason when everyone will just lose when their all launched.

Originally, it was because the enemy was so damn big that blowing up a couple of cities wouldn't stop them; you needed enough to take them ALL out. Then, THEY had so many nukes that you needed even more, in case they nuked your nukes.

The doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction is completely insane, no question- but it worked.

I think the real purpose is the stated purpose; a deterrent.

Inevitably some will go wrong and not launch properly. Others will be intercepted. Some launch sites will be destroyed before they've had a chance to launch. It helps to have spares.
