Why is polyamory so triggering to some people?

Is it because men are insecure that they won't be able to control their women as well? Or because women fear that it's hard enough to find a "normal" guy, so widespread practice will make it so common that they never will?

Like what are the underlying psychological fears that drive people (particularly conservatives) to be so hostile to what other people do in their bedrooms?

I'm a progressive and generally don't really care what other people do...
But I have to admit there is a part of me, that believes that these people don't actually feel romantic love... Like what they feel towards each other, is what I feel towards a fuckbuddy.

I know that having an anonymous GAG reply discounting an entire field of study is not exactly flattering, but I invite you to look up some of the criticism. Much of it is political of course, but then you have scientists in other fields that criticize it for everything from lacking the ability to test it's theories properly, retrofitting theories to fit pre-existing societal hypotheses, and assuming way too much about Darwinism and evolution.

As a specific example, I read a study not too long ago that purported to explain that misidentification of offspring would entail sexual jealousy among men, and this supposedly confirms why men self report it so highly. But this assumes that pre-existing behaviours are influenced SOLELY by these theories, and that these existing behaviour even exist in the form we think it does. I. e, maybe men are sexually jealous because we don't teach them the communicative tools to better value/possess emotional jealousy.

Humans are riddled with them. When you tell people your favorite colour is purple, people are like "meh". Tell them you practice polyamory and it's "OMG THATS NOT EVEN LOVE YOUR girlfriend IS A SLUT BOTH OF YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER"

It's just an interesting sociological inconsistency no? Surely there's a reason for all the explosive reactions.
