I work in higher ed and I was told that when I hired a new technician for my department that if there was a qualified candidate who was black I had to hire him. I really do not believe that is a fair system.

I want the best candidate possible no matter what color they are. I hire people by their merit and take many different things into account. On the job application there is a section on the back about race and disability status. I refused to even look at it.

Um, Thurgood Marshall died almost before I was born. And Brown's actually decently qualified- I'm profoundly unimpressed with her inability to define "woman", but the standards for Supreme Court admission aren't exactly high these days.

Now, if she'd stood up and told Biden "I'm qualified on merit; my sex and race are irrelevant", I'd actually be PLEASED about it, but calling out actual bigotry in these days of people claiming that math is racist is apparently too much to ask.

She is neither the first black person to be on the court, that was Thurgood Marshall in 1967. Nor the first woman on the court that was Sandra Day O’Connor 1981

She is he first person on the court who refuses to define the most basic word of "woman". This is of course a major problem if you claim to be a judge charged with reading and enforcing laws.
For if the words of said laws do not hold the same meaning as given to them by the legislators who wrote them, you are in fact making entirely new law on a case by case basis.

This of course is the effective abolition of the rule of law, honoring the definition of words for a court matter. They are everything for a judge.

In the military, in our unit (all male, combat arms, special operations) we had a motto "best man for the job "
The mission should establish the parameters and the merit of the individual should be the ONLY consideration.
If the "should be" parameters are not the priority, but stating a person's ethnicity and chromosomes status is the actual goal... then the constitution will not be served.

I remember a time when a Judge/Justice was a sacred position where the selected person was chosen based on their ability to apply the law and create "Justice". Interpretation of law is not supposed to be political, even if creation of law is political.
